Guest guest
Sandy..how can one get control of bronchiactasis when you continually have flareup after flareup after flareup? It seems I'm on anti's more than I'm off of them..and NOT for management but to TREAT the flareups. I take leviquin for say 10 day..w/in 3 -5 days I have another flareup and am back on anti's again..so how am I supposed to get a grip? I cant even get my flu shot!! Thanks..Sandie MD Never Look Down on SomeoneUnless You're Gonna Help Them Up
Guest guest
Hi Sandie! I am totally in the same predicament as you! I go perhaps 1-2-3 weeks between flareups when once again I am back on antibiotics for 14-21 day stretches. Hi Janet..thanks for your response. I wish I could go up to 3 weeks w/out a flareup. I cant get past 3, 4, 5 days...and why we cant get a better grip on management. At this point I don't think I'll ever get my flu shot. I go perhaps 1-2-3 weeks between flareups when once again I am back on antibiotics for 14-21 day stretches. My docs do change the antibiotics around but I still feel that one of these days my body will resist! I recently "enjoyed" my freedom from crackling lungs and phlegm but was struck by a sinus infection instead! It went to my ears and I am dealing with that now ... then boom I got a bronc flareup again. Perhaps the antis will help with ALL my infections! It's almost Thanksgiving here and hopefully I won't be coughing over the turkey!! Yeah if anyone out there is doing something I'm not, let me know too! Guest guest
Sandie, Still get your flu shot! I got mine and think I was already in a flareup! I also got a pneumonia shot too, we must take precautions! My respiratory therapist tells me to use the Acapella devise [flutter valve] daily and if you can do it, the postural drainage exercise too. Plus we're to physically exercise a lot too. I belong to Curves and try to go every other day, and in between I walk the dog, climb the stairs in the my house, and use the treadmill and bike at the hospital once a week! I think if we keep our lungs working with breathing exercises through physical exercises it has to help!! I am trying to keep my weight down too! I also have diabetes and heart disease, so it is always an onward battle for me. Good luck, I am there with you! Do you live in a cold area? I don't think that helps us I'm thinking we need a warmer, moisture climate. I live in northern California and fortunately the weather for the most part is mild but of course it is the dry air and low humidity in the summer months that don't help along with the forest fires! I'm thinking I should move to Tahiti, ha ha! Janet Sunniesback55@... wrote: Hi Sandie! I am totally in the same predicament as you! But I thought when we get these flareups or infections..like a child w/an infection, we shouldn't get our shots cause it could make us sicker???? I get sick enough when I have a flareup..terrible body aches, down to my toenails, soo weak, can't walk, can't breathe..why would I want to compound that by getting a flu shot and risking the chance of complications? As far as exercise goes, you're correct. My A1ATD support group's motto is..' use it or lose it '..I try..I have a tred mill..but getting out to exercise groups is too risky for me during cold/flu season. My immune system is terrible comprimised and I can't take the chance of exposure...to anything.. Guest guest
About the flu shot - we can still get one during a flare-up, but our fever must be down (normal or close to it). I'm always having a flare up or IVs or something, and just got mine last week. so..i watch my temp and get my shot close to the end of my flareup? I'd like to also contribute to that by saying watch the color of your sputum, if it's any color but clear there's still infection, be it viral or bacteria, brewing..and not a safe time..thanks Never Look Down on SomeoneUnless You're Gonna Help Them Up
Guest guest
Dear Sunny, As you are well aware bronchiectasis is a complex illness. I agree with you! Some people fare better than others. It can depend on what types of bacteria our lungs culture, if we ave other lung disease, as you do, Alpha-1, sinus disease, etc. Doing physio is helpful for me, and keeping active, however I still require monthly IVs and can be fine in the morning, but by night like you running high fevers. Its not as simple as cutting out any foods. I’ve tried that and it didn’t work for me. My mom once took me to a strict naturopath, she said no to sugar, at the time we thought I was allergic to dairy products, but I wasn’t. Well, my diet was at that time limited I still ended up getting sick, having infections, etc. Now, I simply follow a well-balanced and healthy meal plan with some sugar (life is sweet!) ), exercise, do my physio, take my meds, get my flu shots, and follow up with my doctors. Guest guest
Hi Sandy, I always have infection brewing and my sputum is never a clear colour. Its always yellow or green depending upon what is flaring up. I still think its best to get the flu shot. Go with your doctor's advice.
