I saved some of the white tail hair from my horse when I had to put him down several years ago. I gave them to my sister and she had them made into a bow for her violin. Guest guest
> the cat was sacred in anc egypt - sekhmet. wh a housecat died, the family > shaved their eyebrows1 Dear Alice, I love this idea. I have a cat named Pele, black with yellow-green eyes. I collect his whiskers and those of his predecessors to make paint brushes. I thought this was a novel idea then I read that the ancient Egyptians collected mouse whiskers (the cat's must have been too sacred) for their paint brushes. <<<3 Carol

Guest guest
Dear Sam, My son-in-law is a 'Lutheran' or violine maker and repairer- who tells me the tail of a mare has a different texture to that of the male horse. > > In a message dated 2/18/2006 10:09:51 A.M. That's true, at least in the case of my two horses. My gelding's tail (and mane) was soft and fine, in spite of his huge and bulky "masculine" appearance while my mare's tail (and her mane less so) was coarse and thick in spite of her very definite "feminine" appearance. I couldn't help but notice that incongruity. I don't know if that's the "normal" situation or not but it was striking enough for me to see it. BTW, my sister had a very difficult time finding someone who could put the hairs onto the bow. I hadn't realized it might be so difficult. D'you know if there's something particularly difficult about making a violin bow? We raised horses on the farm where I grew up...always a lot of tail hair caught in the fences and boards from the tushy rubbing. I miss horses. Guest guest
> Not fair Carol and here is me with two cats and use Pastel!! > F How about this - lay the whisker on the bare paper and then use your pastel over the top of it to leave a little line where the whisker has been. You could make the most delicate little lines that would be impossible otherwise! I think I'll try it with paint too. Carol

I'm not sure what I would query him about except for what you've already told me. Of course, I'm rarely short on words so I could probably ramble on for quite some time and not ask him for more than you've given me. LOL Thanks for your interest and your willingness to help out.
