Guest guest
Lately, I'm having a bit of trouble with my taste buds. 3 weeks ago, I started taking Sulfasalazine, and 2 weeks ago, started PrilosecOTC. Now, I'm having a metallic taste on top of my tongue or just no taste at all. Of course, I'm still taking all my other meds so there's no change in that. My Rheumy says it's not the meds doing it, so I'm at a loss. Any ideas? Dennis
Guest guest
Hi Dennis, When was the last time you went to the dentist? The funny taste (if it isn't from the meds) may be coming from a leaky old filling or some weird sort of sensitivity to a new filling. If you have a new one, your dentist may be able to put a sealer on it. I've got a funny metallic taste in my mouth, too, and it started after having a new filling. Guess I'd better take my own advice and have it sealed, huh? I hope you get some relief. Guest guest
Dennis, Here is the list of side effects for Sulfasalazine. Although a metallic taste is not listed, mouth sores and loss of appetite are. Just because a side effect isn't listed doesn't mean it's not caused by the sulfasalazine since we are all different. I'd call the doctor and ask what they think. http://www.rheumatology.org/public/factsheets/sulfasalazine.asp?aud=pat a On Apr 7, 2005, at 5:58 AM, delos520 wrote: > > > Lately, I'm having a bit of trouble with my taste buds. 3 weeks ago, > I > > started taking Sulfasalazine, and 2 weeks ago, started PrilosecOTC. > Now, I'm > > having a metallic taste on top of my tongue or just no taste at all. > Of > > course, I'm still taking all my other meds so there's no change in > that. Guest guest
I didn't have any problem with loss of appetite because the Pred balances it out. I stopped taking the Sulfasalazine day before yesterday, and I started to have taste buds and less metallic taste yesterday. Today is much better also. I've been in severe pain since the second week of the med, but that's been much inproved, also. I'm convinced that the Sulfa drug is not one of my favorites. I did talk to my RA nurse, and she not the Doc would admit that there were any problems with my meds. I can't talk to either of them until Monday because the clinic is only open 3 days a week, Mon-Wed... I had another 'taste' experience while I was in the hospital for 'MTX induced pneumonia' in January. Meals come in a covered plastic dish. When the meals were hot, I had a terrible taste to all the food, but when it was cereal or other cold food, there was no problem. I lost a few pounds then.
