Hello everyone.

I've been on two different combinations of medication since being

diagnosed with RA in January of this year. So far, I've had very little

relief from my symptoms. To complicate things more, I had gastric

bypass surgery 2 years ago, and my physician feels that this is

complicating my body's ability to absorb the medications I take. The

only real success I've had has been with Cortisone injections and

Prednisone given by IV recently after having surgery.

Obviously, I can't be going in for IV administration of medications daily,

so giving myself injections is something I will be discussing with my

Rheumy in 2 weeks. I know that she had mentioned MTX by injection,

but I am also on Prednisone, Plaquenil, Minocycline, Oxycontin and

Folic Acid.

Anybody know if these come in injectable form? Where do you inject

them....leg, arm?

Thank you...

MTX in injectable form can be more effective than oral, so switching to

the injectable will bypass your stomach.

Other than that the biologicals such as Enbrel and Humira are

injectable and then you have Remicade which is done in a doctor's

office or hospital and is administered by IV infusion. Self

injections can be given in the arms, legs, thighs or stomach. I hope

you find something that helps.

Not that I'm aware of. The steroid injections are tricky, so I doubt they would

let you do it yourself.

Folic acid is available as an injection and some people give it to

themselves. Minocycline and Plaquenil aren't. Oxycontin is slow

release all the way through the bowel, so shouldn't be a problem as

long as it gets past your stomach, as far as I'm aware.

Methotrexate and all the biologicals are injection as are gold

injections, which no one uses anymore but I've been on them for 14

years and LOVE them and wouldn't trade them for the world.

maybe injection meds would be better for you. I don't know any RA

patients in your situation. I live in Canada too. () and

used to live in Calgary for 7 years...you should call the arthritis

society there. and team were awesome for me and they

used to have a young persons arthritis group where I met some great

people. I bet they would know others in your area with the bypass

surgery and meds who could help.
