Guest guest
As many of you may know, the State Court in Florida has determined that today at 1 PM Terri Schindler-Schiavo is to begin a long process of starvation and dehydration. The Federal Government has been working on legislation that will protect Terri. Just this morning, a subpoena was issued for Terri to appear before Congress next week to testify on her circumstances. This buys her more time, while both houses in Congress work to agree on the Incapacitated Persons Legal Protection Act. This law would allow for Terri and others in her situation to ask the federal district courts to review rulings of the state courts which they feel denies them their rights. Our society, our media, and our government frequently undervalue the quality of life experienced by people with disabilities. Despite the high life satisfaction reported by many people with the most significant disabilities, we are still often viewed as pitiable. Many non-disabled people suggest that they would rather be dead than disabled, but we cannot allow this perspective to determine our nation's policy on starving to death people who are legally incapacitated. Please use this link to contact your Representative in Congress and our Senators Clinton and Schumer today and urge them to support the Incapacitated Persons Legal Protection Act today! This is particularly important in New York as Senators Schumer and Clinton seem to view this as a " right to die " issue instead of a disability rights issue. http://capwiz.com/rochestercdr/issues/alert/?alertid=7255456 & type=CO Spino Systems Advocate Center for Disability Rights (voice/TDD) jspino@... ------------------------
