EPA's AIRNOW project - Real time air pollution data

http://www.epa.gov/airnow/

As part of the Environmental Monitoring for Public Access and Community

Tracking (EMPACT) initiative, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has

created this site to keep the public informed about air pollution and its

effect on health. Recently, the EPA added a map of the full domain of their

pilot-scale program, 21 Eastern and Midwestern states, so that visitors can

view ozone levels from Missouri to Maine. The site provides daily, regional

ozone maps, health facts, real-time data by state, and ozone forecasts.

Past ozone maps are available in Map Archives. Citizens who are interested

in reducing air pollution will benefit from the EPA's tips.

The goals of the US EPA's AIRNOW website are to: 1) provide real-time air

pollution data in an understandable, visual format, 2) provide information

about the public health and environmental effects of air pollution, 3)

provide the public with information about ways in which they can protect

their health, and actions they can take to reduce pollution.

This website currently focuses on ground-level ozone (smog). Future plans

for this website are to expand the geographic coverage of the current ozone

maps and to include other pollutants.

The pesticide use maps show regional scale patterns in use intensity within

use, such as for individual counties. The maps are based on state-level

estimates of pesticide use rates for individual crops, which have been

compiled by the National Center for Food and Agricultural Policy (NCFAP) for

1991-1993 and 1995, and on county-based crop acreage data obtained from the

1992 Census of Agriculture. Updated March, 1998.

U.S. EPA Office of Air Quality Planning and Standards

The Clean Air Act and Amendments of 1990 define a " nonattainment area " as a

locality where air pollution levels persistently exceed National Ambient Air

Quality Standards. Designating an area nonattainment is a formal rulemaking

process and EPA normally takes this action only after air quality standards

have been exceeded for several consecutive years.
