Guest guest
Joy, I've read that some people have weight loss with PF due to the energy used up by the struggle to breathe. For me it didn't work that way. Prior to my diagnosis, though I was having a mighty struggle to get enough air, I think that was offset by how limited my activity became. I couldn't even walk my poor dog. Since my diagnosis I've been on prednisone and ironically I've actually lost weight while on the prednisone. Not alot but 17 pounds is 17 pounds and better off than on right? Obviously I would have lost more without the prednisone but they're weaning me off so all things in time. I'm learning patience....not my best thing! lol Beth (Fibrotic NSIP 06/06)Draw close. Hold hands. Life is short. God is good. Like Beth, I have lost weight while on prednisone. As I have shared many times, I have had no serious drawbacks from prednisone. One thing I have realized is that I can not eat till I am full. I eat mini~ meals all during the day. My tummy gets so full and I feel it press against my lungs (or think I do.) So when I have overstuffed, I have such difficulty breathing. I am not really hungry, either....just know when it's time to put the feedbag on. Love ya'll! kiss kiss, Ginger 9/04 ipf

Curious about weight loss I know that a side affect from PF is/or can be weight loss. I'm wondering how it happens. Do you eat less, does the struggle of the lung and heart take up too much energy? I would like to know - it would be one thing I would look forward to, I think. Joy 3/
Guest guest
Hi Joy, When I first started to have problems the weight loss is what got the drs attention. I went from 146lbs to 102lbs in about 6 weeks. I did not realize I wasn't eating because it was all I could do just to breath. It took me 3 months to get my weight back up to 132lbs. It is still a struggle to keep the weight on. HP 6/06joynoel3208 wrote: I know that a side affect from PF is/or can be weight loss. I'm wondering how it happens. Guest guest
Beth. Patience is not my long suit either. My prayer is, "God give me patience, but give it me right now!" hehe. Guest guest
Hi Mark! Long time no 'see'....guess the guys have weight problems too. Seems to be a gal thing mostly. I lost 50 gained back 15. I'm fairly sure it isn't what I eat that's bad for me...I eat very little...but I get NO exercise 'cause I hate to use the oxygen on exertion. Guest guest
The months before my diagnosis I lost 35 lbs., I thought It was moving and taking care of my brother in law. running a lot. the reality knocked on..no... in my door. Went on prednisone and gained 70 lbs. in 7 weeks. NOW I'm trying to loose a BUNCH. I've lost about 35 lbs. or so. I see the transplant Dr Nov. 7 so we'll see what he says now.. I still need to loose 15 to 20 more. NOT easy. As far as what is ahead, I let God take care of that. We're all different. Do everything and anything you have always done for as long as you can.. the slow down will come down the road. I was Diagnosed two years ago and have done really well. A lot of this is the way we look at it. Love and Prayers, Peggy 9/04 ipf I know that a side affect from PF is/or can be weight loss. I'm wondering how it happens. Guest guest
Joy, I have always been fluffy...at the height of prednisone I weighed 222. Now, consider that I am 5'2". I now weigh 152, which does not put me in the skinny range by any means. I have lost the weight over the last two years. I eat like a pig, like always! I have been told that the weight loss occurs because our bodies are working so hard to get the oxygen out to all the peices and parts. I cough a lot, but it doesn't use up that much energy. I am so glad for the wt. loss because it helps me breathe better. Does anyone else know? Nurses respond.. Guest guest
Mark, One of the things that is helping me loose weight is treadmill. Hate that thing. But I have lost about 35 lbs. Sweets are my big downfall...oops lol I have talked to a few guys that have had transplants and sound wonderful. I am so on the fence. If I were younger I would NOT hesitate. But the odds aren't that great for 64. I see my Dr Wednesday and to the PFT and all the goodies. then see the transplant Dr. in Dec. So keep me in your prayers. God is Good.
