Hi Arlene.

No offense taken at all. People don't have to follow the carb advice

me/others are doing... they can pass on it. However, one thing they can get

fromit is to simply be aware that carbs greatly effect bgs and make them

difficult to manage and in type 2 diabetics, quick acting carbs will, over

time, burn out their remaining functioning beta cells and destroy the

pancreas. However, as I've stated before, all minerals and nutrients you get

in fruit you can derive the exact same ones just by eating slow acting carb

veggies. They are all in there ... same ones that are in fruits, are in

those as well. For calcium, you can take a calcium supplement or obtain it

from cheese you eat. It is good to take a multi-vitamin to cover any

nutrients you might miss. Yes, discuss this with your docs but if they are

of the traditional ADA mind set of eat carbs, low fat/meat, then your not

going to get a doc who is willing to listen to you. I'd suggest find one

that will work with you on low carbing and doing blood work results to

determine your physical health/and how low carbing is helping you as a

diabetic. Dr. Bernstein is type 1 and a doctor practising for 20 years and

none of his patients has had any complications from following this diet. In

fact, their dibetic complications 100% reversed. It 100% opposes the ADA but

has much better results on all his patients blood work than the ADA diet.

I.E lipid panels excellent, kidneys, etc.

Hi

Hi, my name is Alice and I am a full time caregiver to my husband, Bill, who has the advanced stage of MS. Bill is totally bedridden as he can't move his body or use his hands. His memory is gone, he's legally blind, he no longer can communicate, he has autonomic dysreflexia, he chokes on his salvia and he hesitates swallowing his foods and fluids. I am my husband's hands and feet. I transport him daily, clean him, exercise him, feed him puree foods and give him his fluids thickened. We are both born again christians and our faith and love is what keeps us going without giving up as I've been caring for Bill full time since 1995. Bill is a 100% service connected veteran and four months ago we began receiving aide service helping me care for Bill, 2 hrs. per day, except holidays or weekends. Today the VA called me to tell me they are going to give Bill "Home Based Primary Care" that he is in desperate need of. What I miss most of all is not being able to communicate with Bill, though I do talk to him, he just can't respond.Alice

Have you set a goal for the maximum number of carbohydrate grams per day or

per meal or snack you will consume? I love chips, but they are now a no no

for me, since they are loaded with carbs. For a crunchy and salty taste I

munch on a few roasted nuts. It seems to help me. I consume around an

average of 50 plus or minus 10 grams of carbs per day, and it took me almost

a week to get over those carb cravings. I have more energy now, and in the

past five months I have lost 22 pounds. Be prepared to buy new clothes,

since you will probably drop a size or two in your clothes requirement.

hi

> hi just wanted to let everyone know that I am starting my carb counting,

this morning I had two pieces of toast and three eggs with cheese I also

bought turkey for turkey and cheese sandwiches which I have tried for lunch

yesterday, I still crave chips or something with my sandwich but I am hoping

in time its easier to fight that,. is there anything else that I can sub,

with the sandwich to kill that craving for the chips? either way, the lunch

was good and so was the breakfast. so here is hoping.

Thanks Rita for that one, which is a great one to have. I eat a lot of pork

rinds these days, but no chips!

Hi Harry, Shane and list,

I know of course your main concern is tight bgs control. Atkins suggests

no more than twenty or thirty caarbs a day and yet you drop weight with

fifty a day. hmmmmm I am confused. And still fat! Rita

In addition I also walk 2.0 miles or more every other day. My aunt, who has

had a weight problem all her life, also walks and does low carbing, and she

has lost a lot of weight, but she is still fat. I guess some people are

just going to be big no matter what. Now that i am in fairly good aerobic

shape with my heart, I am going to start walking 2.0 miles per day for six

days per week, since this may be the only way I will lose thos eight or ten

pounds of fat on my belly. Getting in aerobic shape took me around three

months of consistent and regular walking on the treadmill, which is one of

the best investments for my health I have made besides going on a low carb

diet and dosing with insulin. I hope to prove my cardiologist wrong who

predicted that I had five years to live. According to his prediction I

still have three years and eight months left to go, but no matter what comes

and when it comes, I just hope to enjoy the day today, right now, if you

know what I mean.

Rita Hello, My mother has been on the acqons diet for a year now. She lost about

40 pounds. Don't give up hope. Are you doing it yourself? or, Do you have some

one helping you?

With great respect

There is always hope! I would describe my overall health as inferior, not

superior. I find pleasure in the struggle, whereas others may see despair.

I care not for the doctor's opinion, even though he might be right. I have

today, right now, to live, and I will do so.

Hi Shane.

Try pork rines. They are carb free... they have 0 carbs in them and give you

the crunch of a potato chip. They are great! Around here, we have them in

various flavors like plain, seasoned, and spicey.

one nice thing about routine though Rita is results. Once you start to see

the results, man! it feels great! And like Harry is saying, you will

eventually feel that runners high they call it and it feels great to have

that and to finally feel healthy etc.

one thing to keep in mind though Rita is to set reasonable goals. If you

know you hate exercise, don't say your going to do it every day of the week

for 20 minutes. You know that won't last based on past experiences. Be

reasonable and know your own personal limits. I know I won't walk more than

10 minutes on my treadmill at a time and no more than 3 to 4 times a week. I

could say I will do it every day for 20 to 40 minutes, like it is suggested

to do, but I know after a while I will quit just because it isn't me. Some

exercise is better than no exercise IMO. So, start into it slow. Ride your

bike like 3 times a week for 10 minutes. when your ready, Then ride it 3

times a week for 15 minutes. when your ready past that, Then 3 times a week

for 20 minutes and so on. Split up your days. Monday you ride, tuesday you

have the day off, Wednesday you ride, thursday you have the day off, etc.

I'm with you rita about the routine thing when it comes to exercise. I have

a small house and no place to put a tred mil or exeercycle so I hold on to

the back of my sofa and run in place. I also do as much walking as I can

with my guide dog.

We just returned from a 3 day cruise yesterday and i can't believe how much

walking you do on those cruises-just to get from one end of the boat to the

other! As you know, however, they over-fortify you with exotic food! I did

mange to keep the carbs down, however, but ran rather high blood sugars. I

think this was due more to the excitement than anything else as I really

tried hard not to overeat. the first night there however, the waiter at our

table (who was from Poland)insited I have a piece of sugar free banana as

" my mother stayed up all night baking it for you " ! I managed to get away

with only 2 bites.

LOL good for you pat eating 2 bites. I also jog in place at my home holding

onto the corner of my wall and just jog in place. I also jump up/down like

15 times then continue jogging in place etc. the jumping really helps the

calves.

Rita,

One thing you definitely know about me is that I am lacking in tact and

diplomacy. I like to go to the heart of the matter and no messing around.

It comes from three decades of dealing with mentally ill folks, who spend

most of their time denying the truth about themselves and making excuses to

cleanse their mind. I believe a corrupt mind needs a good brainwashing from

time to time.

sad pat. so many diabetics just don't care while they still have a decent

body. They only care after they get a serious diabetic complication like

blindness, kidney failure, a stroke, neuropathy, amputation, etc. But often

times, when that hits them, they give up and just die. It is rare for

someone to get determined and buckle down after they are hit with a diabetic

complication. Harry, myself, and am certain others on the list got fired up

and began to get serious about diabetes after our complications with it.

However, most don't. Once they get a complication, it is enough to remove

any hope from them then they just give up and die. Very sad to me when after

all, they don't have to do this, they*choose* to do this. Again, key words

is have and choose. They don't *have* to do this, they *choose* to do this.

Your friend doesn't *have* to run an a1c of 7 and eat like that and kill

himself over time, he *chooses* to do that.

Humans are so complex... I just am baffled why someone with diabetes would

commit a slow suicide when they don't have to and can live a long and

productive life? I guess that is why my wife as a counselor makes good

money? People are just that messed up to do that? shrug? *scratch my head* I

just don't get it?
