Guest guest
Dear ; It is all very variable on the individual > some people react well to opiates while others do not. Opiates will give you an eventual tolerance and people become dependent on opiates but this is not the same as addiction. As to whether it is a normal reaction or not depends o whether it worked or not for you. You may need to take more if they work with your meds until your body is used to this amount or you may need a lower dose or a milder opiate. Maybe you do not need any narcotic at all. Do not be afraid to discuss this with your doctor. Hope this helps. I had to turn to opiates years ago and am now on a high dosage of a 12 hour very potent opiate. Some of these meds like Duragesic patches or Oxycontin 12 hour time released doses are for opiate tolerant patients. Percocet is a prn med ( for 4-6 hours but may be too strong a choice, you may react better on a hydrocodeine like Lorcet or Lortab ( which come in 5. 7.5 and 10 milligrams) or even with a tylenol with codeine. Or you may not be an opiate tolerant person at all. Yes it is hit or miss unfortunately. Keep the hope up and all I can say is that it is better to live pain free than to be in needless pain. Many people fear becoming dependent but diabetics are dependent on insulin and if you have a thyroid problem you also need daily meds ( both autoimmune diseases in nature, ironically so do not let a social stigma alone keep you in pain. Guest guest
, I don't have RA, but do have a great deal of pain similar to it from Dercum's Disease and Fibro. I take Ultram as needed, which is usually 2 tablets at dinner and 2 tablets at bedtime. I also take Diclofenac as an anti-inflammatory, and Remeron which helps me sleep. I started running a fever yesterday afternoon, but right after I took the Diclofenac at dinner and the Ultram, I started feeling better, and actually felt good enough to play with our grandchildren for awhile last night (a 5-year old and 2-year old triplets.) Of course, I'm sore this morning, but it was worth it! I understand your frustration as it took several tries before we found the right combination for me. I can't take anything with codeine in it either, and had an allergic reaction to Bextra. I hope you can get some relief soon, Judi > >

Guest guest
, With narcotics, especially short-acting formulations, the " start low, go slow " motto applies. You can try splitting the pill and spreading out the time in-between doses, and, often, you will get used to it. But, typically, for chronic pain, sustained-release formulations (like OxyContin or the Duragesic patch) are better than short-acting meds like Percocet. If you need round-the-clock-relief, sustained-release meds will usually be more convenient and more effective. You'll achieve a steady-state of the drug in your system rather than the highs and lows of a short-acting med. You can use the short-acting med for breakthrough pain. I'll tell you where to go! Guest guest
Hi : I am sorry you are in so much pain right now. I have RA and Fibro, and for pain, I take Ultracet, usually one or two in the morning and two at night, and then during the night also if needed. It does not take away the pain, but does take the edge off so I can function. There are times when I think I need something stronger, but until I really do, I am going to stick with the Ultracet. Also, sometimes just being able to get a good night's sleep can do a lot of the pain level, and maybe you can discuss a light sleeping aid with your doctor too. I take Trazadone, and have also taken Elavil in the past, and this helps me to get to sleep. I sometimes wake up with pain and have to take Ultracet, but on the whole I am able to return to sleep fairly soon. Let us know how you are doing - take care - hope this helps Kathe in CA --- ltlmisscrankypants <ltlmisscrankypants@...> wrote: > > > I am totally frustrated! > > I desperately am trying to get my RA under control, > and am still having > quite a bit of pain.
