What do you have to do to have a conflict-of-interest in the eyes of the

American Academy of Pediatrics? Margararet Rennels, MD, the official AAP

representative to the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices is

also on or has been on the payroll of Merck, Merck Laboratories, Sanofi

Aventis, Wyeth Vaccines, and GlaxoKline. She will be making a

presentation at the AAP Convention on the vaccine industry's plans for

our children in the next 3 years. Prepare for evermore vaccines.

The ACIP is not some unimportant federal commission, and they are

anything but " advisory " . This is the federal board that decides what is

the " recommended schedule " of vaccines. Most states will adopt these

recommendations without question and make them mandatory for children to

attend school or daycare. In effect, the ACIP are the Federal Vaccine

Commissars.

And the truly frightening thing about this is that conflicts of these

types are the norm on the ACIP. If a member of the Security and Exchange

Commission had similar conflicts they would be guilty of a felony. In

the world of public health it is a standard operating procedure. And who

are they working for, our children's health or their employers bottom line?

Here's more conflicts from the ACIP meeting minutes for February:

Those reporting potential conflicts of interest were Dr. Greg Poland

(grants from Chiron, VaxGen, and Merck Research Laboratories), Dr.

Treanor (Wyeth, MedImmune), and Dr. Levin (clinical trials for

GlaxoKline [GSK], Merck, and Merck’s DSMB).

Here's a synopsis of Rennels presentation:

The U.S. immunization program has been enormously successful in

improving the health of infants, children and adolescents. The near

future holds hope for the program to be raised to the next level with

the possible addition of conjugated meningococcal, Tdap, rotavirus, MMRV

and human papillomavirus vaccines to the childhood and adolescent

immunization schedule. The objectives of this seminar are to review the

current program, discuss vaccines and vaccine recommendations on the

horizon, and outline major policy and service issues these changes will

bring.

The question is: Is there any relationship between a pediatrician and

the vaccine manufacturers that would be perceived as a

conflict-of-interest according to the prevailing ethics in the AAP? I

think the answer is clear.

This has got to stop. And only we can stop it.

Come to Washington DC on Oct.7 and 8.
