Finally starting my IMP

HI, it has been a while since I posted.  I met some of you at IMP camp last fall and am finally ready to start my own IMP in Austin, TX.  I have my entity formed (PLLC here for me).  I hope to open in September as solo-solo.  Looking into a rent-a-room situation, but still looking for just the right place.  Is there really no way to start the credentialing process without a business address?  Someone said PO box doesn't work, does home address work and then switch it?  Any other potential work arounds?  I am pretty sure I need my malpractice set up before credentialing as well, right?  Will they let you set it up with a future start date?  I don't really want to pay for rent/malpractice for 2-3 months that I have no intention of even seeing a patient!

Thanks again for all of the great info that comes through on the list-serve.  I feel so much more informed than without it!Betsey Sorensen

Betsey,Regarding malpractice, are you just starting out?  Or are you currently practicing somewhere?  Because you will need either 'tail' or 'nose' coverage if you are currently in practice.  I would find a place to practice and ask the landlord if you can use the address and come by to pick up mail once/week until you are ready to open.  We are moving on 7/1, and I am very surprised at the amount of mail that we are already getting at our new address, even though we have been very clear that everyone is to use our current address as the mailing address until that time.  Not sure if you can use your home address, since you won't be seeing patients there (presumably).  Some insurers want to do a 'site visit' to make sure you are a legitimate practice….

Good luck in setting up your practice!

Betsey,Congratulations on your decision to make the leap! When I first started out, I had a mailbox at Mailboxes, Etc (now the UPS Store) and the address was something like "1234 Maple Street #342, Metropolis, CA". So I don't think anyone could tell that you are using a mailbox service vs a brick and mortar address based on this. Obviously, if you go through the US Postal Service, it will be labelled as a PO Box, so try using a private mailbox service. Alternatively, you could ask a friend/colleague if you could have mail sent to their business address until you get yourself set up. The advantage of a private mailbox service is that you never have to change this address, even if you change your office location. Good luck! SetoSouth Pasadena, CA

WARNING WARNING WARNING I started my credentialing with medicare using my home address which is my “administrative” office. I got credentialed and when I finally got a signed sent the change of address form. My site is in the same state MD but as far as CMS, and more importantly the crazy contractor, it is part of DC. Which essentially means that I had to send another complete application after I got the letter of approval. 6 months later I am still not credentialed. So my point is you can get started but check CMS website to make sure the neighborhoods you are looking into are part of the same “state”.
