Faith,

I started on Methotrexate 6 weeks ago. I took 7.5 mg for 5 weeks, then had

blood work again.

Dr, just increased the dose by 2.5--so now he has me on 10 mg for another 5

weeks. I have to tell you, that for pain in my extremities, hands, fingers feet,

toes, arms, neck and shoulders, I have NO relief yet at all. But what I

describe as " deep " pain---I do have some relief. Deep, like I had terrible pain

from tendonitis (RA related) in both hips and groins for over 1 1/2 years--that

pain is somewhat improved. My elbows are a bit better as is my back. Nothing to

write home about really, but instead of the 24/7 burning amd aching, it's now

like 22/7.

[ ] METHO. how long before it works?

Hi group,

I started Methotrexate 4 weeks ago for the treatment of RA.I take 6 pills (15

mg) per week. I know it takes awhile to take affect. I would like to know what

experience most have had here with the length of time on methotrexate prior to

getting some relief. As of today I have not experienced much relief. Is this

usual to take this long before one starts feeling any benefit from the drug?

Faith,

This is from Hopkins Arthritis site:

Usual Time to Effect: The onset of action is 4 to 6 weeks, with 70% of

patients having some response. A trial of 3 to 6 months is suggested.

Faith,

I also take 6 Methotrexate per week. It took about 3 to 4 months before I

felt any effects. My arthritis is all in my hands. I noticed a very gradual

improvement in the pain. Now I am at the point where I don't usually have any

pain in my hands except occasional twinges and I don't take any pain meds.

However, I do have the enlarged knuckles and both small fingers are sort of

twisted. I don't think that has gotten worse over the last 6 months. I try to

take

a picture of my hands every 2 months or so for comparison.

Faith,

It also took me about 6 weeks to tell a difference. I hope you start

seeing some relief soon. Tawny

Hi

I can't remember how long it took for methotrexate to work, but it

seemed like a while, quite a few months I would say, I was just taking

celebrex everyday, but once the methotrexate started kicking in, I

could reduce the celebrex to every couple of days, to now where I

don't need to take it at all with 12.5mg methotrexate. I have found

methotrexate makes you feel pretty yucky, but has definitely improved

my pain and movement, so worth it in the end
