Guest guest
Tom, Last year when my cardiologist was pushing for me to take Sotalol, I did an informal poll through the Maze Board and the alt.sci. cardiology site. Out of about 50 replies, only four had found Sotalol to be effective. The common reasons for discontinuing the drug were too slow pulse, depression, tingling and numbness in the extremities, and dizziness. No one reported any really serious problems such as death, but there may be a reason for that. :-) (Just kidding!) One person in particular, W., has had great success with Sotalol and has been in sinus for over a year now on Sotalol, I think. You might try to contact him through the Maze Board to ask about his experience with Sotalol. He has been a member here; but, like me, he seems to become less active here when he is not having afib problems. At any rate, my new cardiologist told me that Sotalol seems to be more effective with men than with women. It might be worth a try because if it works for YOU, that's the important thing. After reading reports from so many people who have taken Sotalol without experiencing Torsades Des Pointes, I am no longer as afraid of the drug as I previously was. However, I definitely would ask to start the drug in the hospital because, according to my cardiologist, the first two days are statistically the most likely time for Torsades to occur if it is going to. If you get through those first two days, apparently the drug is relatively safe. in Seattle
