‘Patchy prostate cancer treatment may cost lives’By Ring VARIATIONS in the quality of treatment available to men for prostate cancer could be costing lives, the Irish Cancer Society (ICS) warned yesterday. The ICS wants the Government to commission a report on prostate cancer similar to the blueprint for the development of services for breast cancer published in 2000. Ideally, the prostate cancer report would look at hospitals and specialists currently providing prostate cancer treatment, the variations in that treatment, and make recommendations on the delivery of optimal treatment levels.

There are around 1,370 new cases of prostate cancer diagnosed every year. This means that one-in-14 men living in Ireland will be diagnosed with prostate cancer during their lifetime. Around 519 men die from the disease, representing 7% of all cancer deaths. snip

The society’s prostate cancer information nurse Sonya Bowen said all the potential side-effects of the treatments available needed to be fully explained to a man newly diagnosed with prostate cancer. * The society’s new Prostate Cancer Information Service can be contacted at 1800 380380 or by email at prostate@.... Contact your legislators. Ask them to fully fund cancer research.

And the trouble is if you don't risk anything, you risk even more.
