Guest guest
I personally don't think there is any risk in drinking a couple of glasses of wine while on MTX. Regular drinking might constitute a risk, but that is a different matter. I took MTX for about 8 years and no-one ever told me not to drink alcohol, although I was aware of the increased risk of liver damage. I carried on drinking wine, because it is one of my pleasures in life, and made sure to get my liver function checked on a regular basis. This latter never fluctuated. I eventually stopped the MTX because it gave me a very severe stomatitis and stopped working. I am now on Enbrel and still enjoying my wine. n France [ ] mtx + alcohol I was told by my rheumatologist that I could have no alcohol at all while on methotrexate. I have been off of alchohol for several years. I have a family celebration coming up and would like to partake. Does anyone know how long methotrexate stays in your system? My wish is to go off for a week or two and have a glass of wine or two. What do you all think?

Guest guest
, I asked my rheumatologist a similar question because I am getting married soon. I was well aware that I should not have any alcohol per my doctor's instructions when he prescribed the medication. He said it is ok to have alcohol occasionally for special events, but he tells people no alcohol because he doesn't like people to drink on a regular basis. My understanding from my discusstion with him is your liver is already filtering quite a few drugs including MTX which puts it over the top to the point where you need the blood work done, and alcohol only adds to the stress on your liver. I am currently on 15mg of MTX and he instructed me no alcohol(only special events) at 10mg. Hope your family celebration goes well and let me know if you have any other questions. > > I was told by my rheumatologist that I could have no alcohol at all > while on methotrexate. Guest guest
, The half-life reported for methotrexate is approximately three to ten hours: http://www.rxlist.com/cgi/generic/mtx_cp.htm But the reason for abstaining from alcohol while on MTX is because of the effect both have on your liver. Have your liver function tests been normal since being on MTX? I've read several sites that say absolutely NO alcohol while on MTX and others that say small quantities occasionally are ok. The overwhelming majority suggest complete abstinence. a On Mon, 07 Mar 2005 23:50:25 -0000, mitlersu <mitlersu@...> wrote: > > I was told by my rheumatologist that I could have no alcohol at all > while on methotrexate. Guest guest
Hi, I drink a glass or two of wine occasionally, and I take 2omg's of MTX. I get my liver tested every six weeks, and everthing is always fine ... knock on wood. I also try to drink a ton of water daily which may help. I'm sure everyone is different, but I have never had a problem personally. I just can't give up a nice glass of wine. Guest guest
Drinking lots of water is very good for flushing out the toxins. I must have a very sensitive liver since even low doses of mtx cause my liver enzymes to elevate. So for me, drinking any alcohol would be a bad idea, but for someone that has normal liver tests, alcohol wouldn't pose such a problem. I'm glad you can enjoy your wine without problems. If I ever am able to locate injectable mtx, I'll be starting on it and my wine drinking days will be over. boo hoo. a On Tue, 8 Mar 2005 20:32:12 -0500, Cristen s <cdharriss@...> wrote: > Hi, > > I drink a glass or two of wine occasionally, and I take 2omg's of MTX.
