This seems to be a huge study that's taking place across the United

other places where this trial is happening. I'm sure there are many others.

These

sites have a lot of info on the study. Sounds very interesting and well worth

being a part of. I'm a firm believer in early, aggressive treatment for RA.

It'll be wonderful getting free medical care, labs, x-rays and medication

for 2 years. A terrific bonus would be getting your RA under control before

any permanent damage is done. Let us know what you decide.

In your place, I'd go for it. All the evidence seems to suggest that early

aggressive treatment gives you the best chance of avoiding permanent damage.

I am in the TEAR study at The Duke Clinic. It's kind of hard because you don't

know what meds you are on, and not all of the med combos are super aggressive.

Some people in the study never actually inject themselves with Enbrel ... just a

placebo for two years!!! I have been in the study for six months.

I trust and respect the Doctor who I see every six weeks who oversees the study

at Duke. I feel the Doctors have a pretty tough job in this study because of all

of the possible side effects that may occur with all of the different meds you

may or may not be on. Fortuantely, I haven't really experienced many side

effects. Thank goodness. You can drop out of the study at anytime if you feel

the meds aren't working for you.

Your doctors visits exrays etc are not all free. All of the meds are free. The

" standard care " any RA patient would receive at Duke is billed to you or your

insurance. All of the extras are paid for by the study grant money. It's a

little confusing. When I check out after my appt, the receptionist/cashier

person's head usually starts to spin, but a research assistant is usually there

with me to sort things out. The research assistant makes all of my appts for

me, and is very nice. With all of that said, I like being in the study, b/c

hopefully this study will prove to the lovely insurance companies that biologics

should be considered a part of standard care in aggressive RA patients from the

get go no questions asked. Wouldn' that be nice?

Cristen, how are your RA symptoms? Can you judge by your symptoms

whether you're getting the Enbrel or not?

Yes, it would be nice to sway the lovely insurance companies to allow

biologics early in the disease. While I was waiting a month (with no

meds because I had to stop Arava) for my insurance company to approve

me for Enbrel, it really burned me up that this decision was being made

by a bunch of bureaucrats instead of my doctors. Sue

Cristen,

I'm surprised that everything isn't covered. Could it be because you

have insurance? Maybe someone without any insurance wouldn't have to

pay? I hope that is the case so more people would be able to

participate. Clinical trials attract the uninsured since everything

is usually covered. I can imagine the headaches of trying to sort out

the billing!

It would truly be wonderful if this trial enabled people to try

biologicals sooner. Biologicals have changed many lives, enabling

some to return to work. Hopefully in time the biologicals will drop

in price making the insurance companies more willing to cover them.

Good luck with your treatment. It's great to hear that you are improving.

I am not sure, they may make exceptions for people who don't have any type of

a,

I haven't commented much on anything, but I started the TEAR trial today and

what might be a placebo is a big yellow pill. Somebody had commented it was an

injection ??? Are you still taking Piroxicam or Mobic (either one) ? Email me

back at jus4suz@... if you don't mind. I really would like to talk to

someone who is doing this.

Thanks, Suzanne
