Hi Recie,

My suggestion is to inquire into your beliefs around 'compulsion' -

you have a compulsion, is that true, etc.

Who would you be without the thought that this is a compulsion when

you are eating, doing what you are doing, etc?

I'm reminded of an old IT joke - it's not a software error, it's a

feature :-)

With love,

Jon

One meditation technique that can be used in this regard is to label

> your thoughts as you catch them arising. Like, " Having a thought that

> this shouldn't have happened, " or " Having a thought that I must have

> done something wrong. " Whatever the thought that is troubling, notice

> it and label it. Then, let it go and return conscious attention to

> the present, what you are doing at the moment.

Thanks, Andy. I'm hoping that finding my own consciousness. . while in

the midst of unconsciousness. . . will help me too.

I'm new to The Work and have been struggling with my eating

compulsion/addiction. I eat really fast and unconsciously most of teh

time. I tell myself I NEED to eat sweets and starches throughout the

day. Afterwards, I look at what I've done and can't quite put my finger

on the Root thought that triggers the need to eat.

Several times I've done The Work on this compulsion of mine, but it

doesn't feel like I'm hitting home with any of the phrase I've used.

Because it hasn't changed the compulsion. Here's what I've started

with. . . " I Should control my eating " ; " I don't trust myself when I

eat " .

I'm not getting to the Root of my unhappiness about it. In doing the

Work on other areas in my life, when I get to a strong

feeling-reaction level with a thought, it seems to help clear me out

better. I'm having trouble being conscious of what I'm telling myself

during my compulsive eating rituals. Any suggestions anyone?
