I don't take Volteran, but I have had the Cortisone injections. The

injections were virtually painless and were well worth taking. I was

shocked at what a difference they made with my pain and mobility.

I am also in the process of getting my Prednisone dose slowly reduced

as I have an upcoming surgery. I flared up the first evening that the

dose was reduced, and it's been getting worse every day since then.

I'm shocked at hour dependant our bodies become on Prednisone and

when we try and reduce the amount we take, the RA flares right up.

Very frustrating!

Hope you're on the mend soon.

Hi ,

I have always found cortisone shots miraculously effective. Sometimes the

problem goes away completely: more often, the shots need to be repeated

periodically. I know it's hard, but needles hurt much less if you're not afraid

of them.

I recently had to cut my Prednisone from 10 mg. down to 5. My anti-

inflamatory was also changed from Naproxen to Volteran, as if it

would take up the slack from lowering the Prednisone. (I also take

Methotrexate, Plaquenil, blah blah blah) Well, all I can say is

OUCH! The RA has caused tendinitis in both shoulders, which is

The Dr. said I could get Cortisone(sp?) shots in my shoulders if the

Volteran isn't effective. Now for the really crazy part-----I am a

Could someone share with me your experience with Volteran and/or

do the shots hurt and help?

, a couple of years ago I was on Voltaren, and I also had a terrible

problem with my right shoulder. The rheumatologist wasn't sure what was

going on (later, it was diagnosed as a rotator cuff tear). He gave me a

cortisone injection, and it helped enormously -relief for a couple of months

from the single injection.

You would have to ask your physician about how much Voltaren you can safely

take each day.

Hi ,

I have had the shots, including once in my shoulder for the same

(horrible) pain you're talking about. My doctor sat behind me and it

didn't take long. It also wasn't terribly painful, as there's flesh

there. I had a systemic response that was wonderful (I was getting

married in a few days and suddenly my wedding ring was way too big, as

even the swelling in the finger joints opposite my shoulder went down!).

In early 2003 I had a similar problem with my shoulder and also in my

hip. I almost got another injection, but then the waitlist for Enbrel

cleared up and I was put on that. I haven't had that kind of pain

since. Speaking of Enbrel, I never could have imagined I could give

myself the shots, but it's so very worth it! Better a tiny pain once

a week than agony for days!

I have been on Voltaren for years. It works very well for me (I think

the standard dose is 2x75mg/day). I know it works well, because I've

had two surgical procedures done and had to go off Voltaren in advance

of them (typical for all NSAIDs?) and was in quite a bit of pain.

Glad to get on it again.

I hope you feel better soon.

Hi ,

I've had numerous shots and generally had good results. The pain

really depends on the MD. I had a rheumy who hurt me so badly that I

wouldn't allow her to do it anymore--I went to a great ortho surgeon

and the shots were almost painless. With RA, you can't be afraid of

being too assertive!

RE voltaren--I've been on it since it came out in the late 80s & have

never had a problem. I take the 100mg ER (extended release) once a

day and it works better for me than the 2 75mgs. The rheumy who gave

it to me at first said something about it being different than other

nsaids with reference to causing increased bleeding time for

surgery. I have had over 15 surgeries since and never go off the

voltaren. The bleeding time tests are always within limits. Even

with mtx and enbrel, I can usually tell when I skip it. It does come

in a generic.

Re taxes--Yes, we always deduct every penny. I also keep MD visits &

physical therapy visits on my calander. Last week I added up Number

of visits to each, parking & cab fares and round trip mileage (you

take off a certain amt per mile) We also add OTC meds and everything

is submitted. It does help!

BTW, I was married in 76, diagnosed in 78, had my daughter in 85 and

retired from work in 99. My RA is pretty much controlled but my

hands are quite crippled and my feet have shrunk to about a size 5

WWWW from a nice 11B! Even my jaw has pulled back due to condular

reabsorption. I know it's no fun being told you have RA, but with

the new biologicals out now and the early aggressive treatment, most,

if not all RA patients, should ever get to this point! So try to

remain positive and smile--it could be worse--that works for me!

I'm not sure about the Volteran, have never been on it. I do like

the cortisone shots they help a bunch. I use to be terrified of

shots, but soon found out that I can deal with them. I give myself

the Humira injections, and didn't think that would ever happen in a

million years. But, would rather deal with a sting, then a bunch of

horrible pain from the RA.

Good luck,
