Angie,

While I'm sorry you've got a fracture, I'm glad that it has been

found and is being taken care of! The camowalker isn't bad, I had

one when I broke my ankle. At least you can bathe, and scratch!

How long would you have to be on predisone for it to cause this

problem Just wondering if that is why I ended up with a fracture

but I have only been on it since july and I just take 5 milligrams a

day. Do you know what else can cause these the doctor didn't really

say all he said is the pressure of being on my feet all day.

Angie,

I doubt the prednisone is the cause of your stress fractures with that

dose since July. Everyone is different as far as how long it takes for

prednisone to weaken bones. One person on our list has been on high

doses of prednisone for several years and has great bone density.

Someone else I know was on close to the same dose for about 6 months

and it destroyed his hips. Not everyone has the same side effects.

Are you a runner? They are predisposed to stress fractures. Have you

had a bone density test to see if you have osteoporosis?

There are some anatomical factors that predispose people to stress

fractures: Pronated feet (flat feet), Rigid pes cavus (foot with a very

high stiff arch), varus knee alignment (bowlegged at the knees), and

leg length discrepancies (when one leg is longer than the other leg).

Last year I had both eyes done. I have been taking 5mg Prednisone every day

for 5 years, just never associated it with the cataracts. In Ontario, it is

fast becoming a popular practice, to have cataracts removed when patients

are having problems seeing and want them done and have scrapped the idea

that cataracts have to be " ripe " before removing. Of course this has created

another problem of longer waiting times. There are still a lot of doctors

that make their patients wait even though they cannot see well enough to

drive, and, of course, there are those that continue to drive in spite of

the fact they cannot see. When a patients' eyes get that bad, the doctor is

supposed to take their driver's license but very few do.

group about the dangers of long term prednisone. Many people don't

realize that taking steroids weakens the bones causing fractures.

Although prednisone is a great pain reliever, unfortunately it comes

with a big price tag.
