Guest guest
Hello, my name is Marsha. I live in Midtown New York City. Last October I had a cold that left me with a cough. Since then I have been coughing and going to doctors and having tests, and not getting any better. Just last week an eminent physician at Mt. Sinai diagnosed me with Bronchiectasis. It is still not 100% certain but everything is pointing to it. My symptoms: pneumonia 3 times, 3 broken ribs from coughing, numerous antibiotics, inhalents, cough syrups, lots and lots of mucous in various colors and volumes and the loss of all kinds of activities that would be ruined by a cougher, i.e., movies, lectures, plays. I am feeling pretty rotten about this as you see, and am wondering what treatment you have received that helped.
Guest guest
Dear Marsha, Sorry to hear about your cough as I've been there. It took about 4 months of treating my symptoms with antibiotics and then I was referred to a pulmonary specialist. He pursued my case as he found it changeling and finally reach a diagnoses of bronchiectasis and a compromised immune system. I had just finished my 18 months of antibiotics for a MAC infection and 4 months later the cough started. It seems that with all my previous infections including the MAC caused the bronch in my lungs. It seems that whenever I have severe coughs I am harboring a serious infection such as psedomonus and aspergillus. When the treatment takes hold, the coughing stops. Those two infections were diagnosed after my two bronchoscopies. During the bronchoscopy, the Dr. was able to remove a lot of the infectious mucus so I got a head start in the healing process. I feel for you and hope your Dr. can put an end to that coughing. Guest guest
Have you considered the possibility that reflux is causing your symptoms? They treated me for bronchiecstasis for one year and nothing helped. Finally I learned I had reflux--then it took 5 months for the Nexium (like Prilosec) to make me well. Guest guest
Ellen – A question about your coughing…and others.. When you cough – is it to bring mucus up – or just a nagging dry cough? I ask because every time I see my Dr. he always talks about my cough – but I only cough to bring up mucus (or try to)…but I would not call it chronic… Thanks and curious…. B. Guest guest
Hello, I saw your e-mail re productive or dry cough. For me, just diagnosed a week ago but coughing for almost a year, it is both. Copius amounts of awful gook, about 75% of the time, and dry the other 25%. I try to clear my chest in the morning but cannot get anything to come up. When I get home from work I clear my chest and it is extremely productive. I feel much better after that, too. Guest guest
Hi there. I cough up stuff all day long. No, I do not cough at other times, just when I need to cough up stuff. I don't really consider myself to have a cough either but, I guess I kind of do. I take azithromycin every day. Everyone have a great weekend! Guest guest
Hi Marsha and welcome, I am the same, my chest is very tight in the morning and the gunk loosens as the day progresses. When I worked, I couldn't wait to get home to do my drainage, and it would come up so easily. Now that I'm not working, I am into a routine of twice daily physio and drainage. I always feel heaps better after clearing my chest, and I hardly cough at all in between treatments.
