Guest guest
Hi Janice - welcome and thank you for what you are doing! Why your interest in this? I ahve never ever rcd a brochure or seen one and have never ever been given any info by a dr, nurse or anyone medical on how to deal with this except to take these pills and inhalers and come back in 3 months. VERY frustrating, past and present. , Portland, OR Reply-To: bronchiectasis To: bronchiectasis Subject: patient brochureDate: Tue, 08 Aug 2006 09:00:52 -0700 Dear group members, I am a new member to this group. I am not a patient or a physician. I am a student in a technical writing course and my assignment is to write the best possible patient brochure on bronchiectasis. One very important aspect of technical writing is to understand the readers and what information is important to them. Thus I am writing to ask for your help. I have a few questions, but feel free to send me comments about any information you received when you were diagnosed with bronchiectasis. 1. Did you receive a patient brochure at the time of your diagnosis? Did the information describe ways to manage your symptoms or was it too technical? Were you given instructions or diagrams on how to clear your lungs? What other information would have been helpful for you? 2. Were you given information that motivated you to relieve your symptoms or were you frustrated by a lack of information? send me your thoughts and many thanks to you in advance! janice payne
Guest guest
Hi , thanks for your response. I am a scientist at a biotech company and I'm trying to transition into technical writing. Translating scientific information for patients is something I would like to do...thus my assignment for this brochure. As I read about bronchiectasis, it seems that each patient is different. Different symptoms, different treatment, which may lead to frustration. Hope you are doing well though. Thanks jan Reply-To: bronchiectasis To: bronchiectasis Subject: RE: patient brochureDate: Tue, 08 Aug 2006 16:09:39 +0000 Hi Janice - welcome and thank you for what you are doing! Guest guest
Hi Janice, I was only given a brochure on chronic bronchitis by my pulmonary doctor who told me that bronchiectasis was just a nuisance. At that time he had not received all of my test results from the bronchscopy and other tests. I called the American Lung Association and went to the office of the director of medical affairs. I was given a lot of literature that was too technical for me and some was contradictory. I learned about this support group and also received information from National Jewish Hospital. I have also spoke to the Lung Line nurses at National Jewish which has been very helpful. I went to a Better Breathing Club, but no one else had bronchiectasis. I also went to pulmonary rehab., but there was only one person there who had bronchiectasis. My daughter is a technical writer for a large pharmaceutical company, and my son took a technical writing course in college. I appreciate what you are doing and wish you luck in your course. Guest guest
Hi Janice, Welcome to the group. As you know bronchiectasis is a complex disease, and our symptoms are varied. I was diagnosed at two years' old, and I know my Mum was very frustrated in trying to get answers about my condition. I have grown up with this disease, so most of what I have learned is from experience. There was no such thing as a patient brochure. I have a productive cough, so I was told about chest physio and postural drainage, which I religiously do every day. I did attent outpatient physio sessions to learn how to do this at home. Because our symptoms vary, we need to self manage. Some bronch sufferers do not have productive coughs, or cough up very little. Some find the use of flutter valve, acapella or the vest are helpful to loosen secretions. The medications we are prescribed (e.g. inhalers, mucolyctics, normal saline, etc) do help, but we all seem to have different treatment regimes. Treating infections is the most important, to prevent more damage being done. Some physicians will only prescribe antibiotics when an infection is present, others will have their patients on a maintenance program. From a patient's point of view, I feel we need more research into bronchiectasis and a greater awareness of this disease. Perhaps we need a brochure to educate the medical professionals as well. Good luck with your assignment, Janet. Guest guest
Hi Janice, Good luck with your project, and will you share the finished product with us? I was diagnosed nearly eight years ago and was given very little information—none of it in writing. An informative brochure would have been wonderful to have had. I would like to have known what causes bronchiectasis, if it was reversible, treatment options, the types of testing that one can expect to have done, the long-term effects on the lungs, and what life-style changes might have to be made. These questions are probably only the tip of the iceberg, but I think that they are important for the newly diagnosed and their families. It has been a rough eight years—I had to have a lobectomy four years ago—but life goes on. And I still work full-time. If you have more specific questions, please feel free to ask. I hope your brochure ends up being distributed and makes its way to my doctor’s office. I do believe that there is a huge need for a project of this type even though we are such a small percentage of the population. It seems to be only the “big” diseases that get anyone’s attention. Bronchiectasis can be just as frightening and devastating as the more well-known diseases. Maybe even more frightening because its so difficult to find out what to expect. Guest guest
Hi Barb, Thank you so much. You've given me some great ideas on what readers would like to know and what I should include in the brochure. I'm still in the very early stages of planning and researching what to write. I would be happy to share the final product but I don't think I can send an attachment through a chat group. You have all been very helpful to me and I'll figure out a way to distribute it. I think I'm supposed to get feedback anyway. Take care, hope you are doing well. jan Reply-To: bronchiectasis To: <bronchiectasis >Subject: RE: patient brochureDate: Tue, 8 Aug 2006 20:39:05 -0500 Hi Janice, Good luck with your project, and will you share the finished product with us? It has been a rough eight years—I had to have a lobectomy four years ago—but life goes on. And I still work full-time. If you have more specific questions, please feel free to ask. I hope your brochure ends up being distributed and makes its way to my doctor’s office. I do believe that there is a huge need for a project of this type even though we are such a small percentage of the population. It seems to be only the “big” diseases that get anyone’s attention. Bronchiectasis can be just as frightening and devastating as the more well-known diseases. Maybe even more frightening because its so difficult to find out what to expect. Guest guest
Janice- I think a brochure is a great idea. I received absolutely nothing in writing from my pulmonologist. All of my info comes through my own research and groups. Sometimes that can be very scary as you are reading outdated info or it just doesn't apply to what is happening in your body. patient brochure Dear group members, I am a new member to this group.
Guest guest
Dear Janice, I agree with everything that Bunny has said, and feel that everyone has excellent ideas. My only suggestion would be to incorporate a diagram showing healthy lungs and those with bronchiectasis. It is highly evident that such brochures are necessary. I'd actually like to see one aimed at adults or parents, one for older children including teens, perhaps a colouring book for younger children, and finally information for physicians since too many of them take this illness lightly. I don't ask for much! ) Best of luck with this project. Would be interested in seeing final results. Thank you! Guest guest
Janice I would like to suggest you look at the Fact Sheet at this link from the Australian Lung Association. It is the most useful summary I ever found on bronchiectasis, although I disagree with a few things they say about " people feel well most of the time. " Not true in my experience but the rest of it is really well done. Copy and paste the link below into your browser. http://www.lungnet.com.au/fact_sheets/bronchiectasis-health.html thanks, Dorothy > > Dear Janice, > > I agree with everything that Bunny has said, and feel > that everyone has excellent ideas.
