Guest guest
now I will admit, this sounds like a plan. no way am I good at writing things down like I should, how ever, I will give this a try and see how it goes. so far I am doing ok. of course there are the moments of weakness when I eat some thing that I should have stayed away from, and I don't ride my stationary bike every single day like I know I should. when the doctor first done the blood work to see if I was diabetic or not, he said my average for the pass ninety days was 156. now I really don't know what this is or means. I am learning how ever. every time I have went back in to do the ninety day blood test again, it is coming down. the last test I done, it was 133. but like I said, I haven't been back in more then six months. I really should go back and check it. I am going to do just that after the first of the month. as long as I stay on the Atkins diet, I do pretty well with controlling my sugar. I heard some one say that maybe I should stay around no more then thirty carbs a day. I think I could do this and do well with my sugar. if I need to take the oral medicine, then I will. but if I can control it with no medicine, then I believe this would be the best. I have heard about some new ways of checking your blood sugar with out poking your finger. poking my self doesn't bother me at all, but I can't always get the blood in that little hole every time. of course I realize that some of these new methods of testing your blood probably isn't blind friendly. you would think that they would make it blind friendly, cause most diabetics loose there sight in the end. ok, I guess I am done with my ramble for now. going to go out and play in my wood shop for a while. thanks for all your good information on this list. you all are a lot of help and I am beginning to depend on you all for my answers I need to deal with my diabetes. when to take the oral medicine > > > > like I said, I am type two diabetic and have been for two years now. so > far, > > the doctor said that if I can control my blood sugar with diet and > exercise, > > then he isn't going to put me on any medicine. my question to the group, > is, > > when will I know that I probably need to be on the medicine? at first when > I > > found out I was diabetic, he had me coming in every three months and give > > blood, so they could see what my level was for the past ninety days. but I > > haven't been back for six months. should I continue to go in every three > > months or not? some times I also am known to skip a meal in the middle of > > the day, cause I just get busy and don't think about it. Guest guest
, Funny you should mention low-carbing as an experiment. I have actually thought of doing that since my last Hemoglobin a-1-c is actually pretty darn good at 5.4, and if by low-carbing I could get off this very expensive Actos I would be so happy. Since Medicare doesn't pay diddly squat for such meds (they pay about $25 on it), I would be spending $160 a month for this stuff. Add that to my other meds and we're talking $310 a month for meds. Youch! And gee, this new Medicare reform was supposed to help...yeah it helps the big drug companies get richer. Anyway, back off my soapbox, it's a good idea as long as you would know when to give it up should it not work for you so you don't do harm to yourself by avoiding the meds. Like you, I think that carbs are the biggest offender in the diabetes equation, and I think low-carbing is one of the best tools against it. If it pans out that this would be enough for many diabetics to get off the meds by controlling their diet, then we not only live better but cheaper, and without making the pharmaceutical companies even richer. All around we'd be better off. We'll see. I should also point out that exercise is still very important, too. Just low-carbing is not enough. Walking is a really great form of exercise and it helps lower blood sugar, but it also helps the body as a whole. Of course I'm lucky, I can walk several miles a day and it's enjoyable to do that. Here in Southern California the weather is mostly good so walking is always " in. " On the east coast that's not always possible but you still should walk when at all possible. Guest guest
Yes, Mark, please do. There are some others here, I believe, who are trying to control their diabetes by diet and exercise alone. I hope they chime in. A long time ago I tried to control my diabetes with diet and exercise alone for a period of about four months, but it became evident that diet and exercise alone for me would not work. I tested my fasting blood sugar every week, and it kept getting higher and higher counts, while I was practically starving myself and swimming many miles per week. So, I finally relented and accepted the doctor's recommendation to start taking oral medications, which I did for 16 years along with diet and exercise. when to take the oral medicine > > > > like I said, I am type two diabetic and have been for two years now. so > far, > > the doctor said that if I can control my blood sugar with diet and > exercise, > > then he isn't going to put me on any medicine. my question to the group, > is, > > when will I know that I probably need to be on the medicine? at first when > I > > found out I was diabetic, he had me coming in every three months and give > > blood, so they could see what my level was for the past ninety days. but I > > haven't been back for six months. should I continue to go in every three > > months or not? some times I also am known to skip a meal in the middle of > > the day, cause I just get busy and don't think about it. Guest guest
Mark, I will give you an example of how I did it, if you wish. You have a woodshop? I would be in hog heaven, if I had one. When I was in high school, my favorite subject was shop, and I took three years of shop, and I would have taken four years of shop, if I could have, but they wouldn't let me take it in my senior year. They made me take piano tuning instead. I was still able to do some wood projects in piano tuning class, whenever the teacher would let me They are trying to perfect a lasar glucose monitor, but it hasn't been done yet. I have asked the sugartrack folks to let me know, when it is ready for use and purchase by the general public. I hat those finter pricks, ouch!. when to take the oral medicine > > > > > > > > > > like I said, I am type two diabetic and have been for two years now. > > so > > > far, > > > > the doctor said that if I can control my blood sugar with diet and > > > exercise, > > > > then he isn't going to put me on any medicine. my question to the > > group, > > > is, > > > > when will I know that I probably need to be on the medicine? at > first > > when > > > I > > > > found out I was diabetic, he had me coming in every three months and > > give > > > > blood, so they could see what my level was for the past ninety days. > > but I > > > > haven't been back for six months. should I continue to go in every > > three > > > > months or not? some times I also am known to skip a meal in the > middle > > of > > > > the day, cause I just get busy and don't think about it.
