Guest guest
Hi Lynn, Welcome to our list. You need to send your email to the list rather than the owners. The address is tetheredspinalcord I will forward these for you. Rick Co-moderator ---* tethered cord Hello, I am wondering if you can help me out with some questions i have? *****How many symptoms/ how severe symptoms would indicate tethered cord? ****Would there always need to be bladder / bowel disfunction to indicate this? ***Would a child's reluctance/ inability to walk a very short distance without sitting for a rest possibly an indicater of tethered cord? ***What about severe leg pains when growing? ****Could tethered cord cause severe pain in a quite localised are----- from knee to ankle? *** how is tethered cord proven/ disproven? **** if several generations in the same family had almost exactly same sypmtoms, would this more likely indicate a inherited tethered cord problem? ((((( leg weakness in walking severe leg pain in area from knee to ankle severe headaches Do you know of a Doctor / specialist in tethered cord that we could send MRIs to for a preilminary assessment ( i assume this is a main technique of diagnosis) thank you for your help Lynn Kading lynnann@... !DSPAM:232,446db16f278188055210974! Guest guest
I can try to answer some of your questions, based on my research over the years... >** Could severe nasuea, which has gone on for months, and is >completely unresponsive to anti nausea meds ( even prescription) be > symptom of tethered cord which has worsened in a teen Not likely, unless the tether is up high on the spinal nerves that affects the stomach. > *****How many symptoms/ how severe symptoms would indicate tethered cord? Leg/foot/ankle pain and weakness. Children are less likely to have pain than adults. Muscle spascity. Bowel and bladder incontinence. Developing hammer toes and high arched feet. These are a few of them. The list would vary slightly for each of us, and the strength of symptoms varies too I probably forget a few, it's late. > > ****Would there always need to be bladder / bowel disfunction to > indicate this? Usually there is, not necessarily > ***Would a child's reluctance/ inability to walk a very short distance > without sitting for a rest possibly an indicater of tethered cord? Yes > ***What about severe leg pains when growing? Yes > ****Could tethered cord cause severe pain in a quite localised are- > from knee to ankle? Yes I started out with just knee pain. > *** how is tethered cord proven/ disproven? By observing symptoms, MRI, usually a low lying conus > **** if several generations in the same family had almost exactly same > sypmtoms, would this more likely indicate a inherited tethered cord problem? Tethered cord, spina bifida, and other neural tube issues do run in families, indicating a genetic link. Most studies report that neural tube defects can be caused by both genetic and environmental factors. They have identified genes connected with SB.
