Guest guest
Janet - I'm sure others will respond too but there is a great deal of research on how harmful these Ionic air purifiers. The ionization creates ozone which damages lungs. One writer on this site developed bronchiectasis sx after she started using one of those. There evidently are other kinds that do not ionize air that don't create ozone and thus don't cause lung/breathing problems. Guest guest
Hi Janet- I've been researching air Purifiers for my dad who was diagnosed a few months ago. I was told the same thing about Ionic Air Purifiers. After I had purchased it I had to return it. I was told by three Air Quality Specialist in Staten Island, New York that the IQAir Air Purifiers are the best for people with lung conditions. They use a HEPA filter. The first tech to recommend The IQAir has a child with CF and he says it has been a big help. He suggested that because it is so expensive that I look for the compact machine. Its easy to move around a room or from room to room if needed. I looked it up on-line and have been trying to find a good deal because they are so expensive. The cheapest I found was $649 and that was for the compact machine. If I find a good deal I will let everyone know. Guest guest
Thank you Lorraine, also and Norma who responded regarding the ionic air purifiers. I had no idea that there was a problem with these kinds of devises as they advertise so well! But if, as you say, someone actually got bronc from usage, I guess I should look for a hepa filter style one instead and avoid ionic ones. Well it does pay to belong to this knowledgeable group! Thank you so much for your speedy input. Enough time for me to cancel my order! Guest guest
Hello Group, Lots of knowledge out there as Lorraine said earlier. I am curious what each of you think brought on your condition. I know some have smoked, but not for a long while. I also get sick so frequently, about every 2 months, was wondering if any of you had ability to work impacted by this dreaded disease. I know for me, I worry about it some since I have a lot of working years ahead of me, but I don't expect any employer would want to keep someone that is sick at least one day every two months. Just curious about how some of your conditions may be been brought on. Thanks for sharing some of your personal information. Guest guest
My doctor could not say with any certainty, however, he did mention four things: I worked where I breathed the World Trade Center air; I moved into a new office building 3 months before the onset of Bronchiectasis; I smoked for many years before I stopped about 20 years ago; finally, it could be a bacteria of some kind but almost impossible to tell. Guest guest
Dear Lorraine, How did you get to the air quality specialist? Are there others in the country? Does anyone have scientific evidence they can share that the ozone produced by the Ionic air purifers is damaging to the lungs. I keep mine in the livingroom, away from my bedroom and I wonder if the position in the home matters? My Plumonologist's nurse's mother has one and she states that it keeps her well. Guest guest
Hi Eileen, I did a search on the Internet under air quality specialist and Techs. I ran into a few dead ends because the majority of companies in Staten Island do it for businesses. But I was lucky to find these 3 and the only thing is that because they are privately owned companies they are expensive but they have 15 and 20 years experience and are knowledgeable of what affects people with lung problems. I'm sure if you search the Internet you will find a specialist. Try the phone book as well. What part of Florida do you live in? If you would like I can help you research. Also if you look up Ionic Air Purifiers they have many articles about why we shouldn't use them. Here's one I copied this morning...... http://medicineworld.org/cancer/lead/5-2006/ionic-air-purifiers-aggravates-asthma.html "ecbauer954@..." wrote: Dear Lorraine, How did you get to the air quality specialist? There was a notice in a health column stating that they feel the ionization that's put into the air is harful for you. I don't know if it's true or not, but I returned mine immediately. Guest guest
Hi Lorraine, I live in Deerfield Beach and have the Sharper Image air purifier and did read the consumer's report on it, however they convinced me that it was safe and we breath in ozone from the air anyway and it is emitted from M/W and many other sources. When I open my front into my living room, which is where I located my air purifier, I am hit with a strong ozone order which I find very unpleasant. I find after awhile that I get used to it and don't smell it anymore.Thank you for your information and appreciate your help. I have the unit for about 1 year and don't know what to do now. It is a lot of money to discard, but I don't want to risk getting sick either. I'm sure if you search the Internet you will find a specialist. Try the phone book as well. What part of Florida do you live in? If you would like I can help you research. L H ROTERING <roteringlmsn> wrote: Janet - I'm sure others will respond too but there is a great deal of research on how harmful these Ionic air purifiers. The ionization creates ozone which damages lungs. One writer on this site developed bronchiectasis sx after she started using one of those. There evidently are other kinds that do not ionize air that don't create ozone and thus don't cause lung/breathing problems. The ionization creates ozone which damages lungs. One writer on this site developed bronchiectasis sx after she started using one of those. There evidently are other kinds that do not ionize air that don't create ozone and thus don't cause lung/breathing problems. Guest guest
Hi Eileen, Sorry I haven't responded. Had a very tough weekend with my dad. After 2 weeks of being in the hospital he has another infection and his pressure dropped 58/40. It was really bad. He's stable now and is out of ICU. whew! I will do a search for you and see what I come up with. It's a shame that you spent that much. I bought 2 of them also and returned them right away. You may not get all of your money back but you could always try and sell it on EBay. It's pretty good and there is always someone out there who will buy it. I'll keep you posted on my research. Take care. Guest guest
Wondering how you who work deal with the illness. For example, I am dragging my way to the office every day and I cough so much at work. Often have to rush to the bathroom as I am having an attack of coughing and need to get rid of the phlegm. It's rough. It is also taking a chance to go to the movies, eat out, almost anything can turn into an embarassing situation. Maybe I will get used to it in time but for now it has altered my perception of my self. Marsha

I just keep kleenex close by and run to the bathroom as often as possible to " clear things out. " I am so worn out by the end of the day that I can only go home and go back to bed. I am not sure I will be working much longer. Guest guest
Hi Marsha, Yes, I am also one of the bronc people who have to work for a living! I totally can understand where you are coming from. I cough quite a bit at the office but people around me are *almost* used to it, ha ha. I try to expel what I can early in the morning by using the Acapella devise and Albuterol inhaler. When I get bad flair-ups I take Cipro 750 mg antibiotics. And sometimes the doc puts me on Prednisone. Usually that's when the phleym is more dark yellow-green which is an indication of infection. Then as soon as I get into my car on the way home from work I *enjoy* a productive coughing fit after trying to suppress it all day. This of course is not the perfect solution. I am newly diagnosed myself and still am being seen by my doctor every few weeks. He is changing my other meds around - I have diabetes, high blood pressure and heart disease! Being an older female I have the " other " problem too which is equally embarrassing. I cough so hard that I pee in my pants, haha! Not yet using the huge diapers - thank God - but I am having to wear panti-liners daily now. Hope you're having a better day today! Janet > > Wondering how you who work deal with the illness. Guest guest
It is very embarrassing when you cough so hard that people around you think you are coughing up a lung. Kleenex is a staple on my desk and always one in my pocket. I know the coughing just wears me out when I get going. My employer, as any employer would, expects me to be a work.....seems like even if you are sick. The high temps just knock me out and then it takes a few days for the antibiotics to really kick in. I don't want to not work, but I also can't expect any employer to retain someone that is going to be sick every other month. I was wondering if anyone has filed for disability social security from this illness and if it was difficult to get it approved. I have short term and long term disability but it is not like I have something that is keeping me down for periods of time to utilize those benefits. Guest guest
Hi ! Yes, like you I have to have tissues on me, with me, by myside all the time along with panti-liners! Your question about disability is interesting. I hadn't really thought about it although I am only two years'away from collecting my first round of social security! But I need the money and don't have any plans to retire .. ever! My firm has about 25 employees and the average age is 55! In fact one of the secretaries there is 76 years old although she works part-time, like me. The firm is pretty understanding of illnesses as there is always someone there with something or another ... lots of migraine and backaches. They are pretty good about me taking off for my many doctor appointments. In between flare-ups I am fine but it seems like I can only go a few days of mild coughing before the heavy stuff kicks in. Yes, I am extremely tired and wiped out by the time I get home from work [i just work three full days] and fall asleep in the chair by 9pm. I used to be so active! In fact I have not been able to audition for community theatre this year .. I love to act and sing but I think those days are now over! Can't have a coughing fit on the stage can I? My voice is raspy these days. Wish there was a cure for this rotten bronc ... I don't know how I caught it. I was perfectly fine this time last year! I would be interested in learning about short term and long term disability in the USA. Guest guest
I am only 39. I talked with my doctor about disability and he told me I would qualify based on my Pulmonary Function Tests. I am at 38%,...whatever that means. I still plan to work as long as I can. Guest guest
Hello Janet, My employer offers both short and long term disability. The short term plans kicks in after 2 weeks off from work. It requires that you use your PTO (time off accrued) before going without pay until the short term kicks in. Once you are off from work for a period of 6 months, the long term kicks in. These are paid out at 60% of your current pay schedule. The problem is that you then have to pay for medical insurance under COBRA which costs an arm and a leg compared to the group plan with my employer. If one is able to obtain disability social security, then at least Medicare would cover your medical. I work for a very large firm and have most of my career. It seems to be the mindset, and I totally understand it, that there is work to be done and you need to be here to complete it.....that is what I was hired to do. When I get fevers it makes one not think as clearly as you might otherwise, thus, making more errors or not completing tasks as quickly as your employer requires. I fear, at least with my current employer, that there is nothing excusable....sick or not. In fact my pulmonary specialist has asked me why they (employer) says these things to me....but I am not alone on that. This causes me to have additional stress because I know that I might get the boot if I am not here. Guest guest
I have another pulmonary function test in November. Things were improving and not declining in that area so I will have to see what it is at. If I understand correctly, the 38% is your lung capacity....the amount of oxygen intake you have and the lung capacity. I too want to work as long as I can. It keeps one going, but I just don't know how long any employer would consider keeping me, if I cannot commit to being here. It is not like you are abusing your sick leave privileges intentionally, but leaves the employer with the question in their mind. You are very young with your diagnosis, how or what do you think contributed to your acquiring this desease? Guest guest
Well, I also have chronic bronchiolitis. I was just dx with that at the Mayo Clinic in MN. I was dx with bronchiectasis in 2000. They think the bronchiolitis caused the bronchiectasis. I am mostly sick with bronchiolitis. I don't know too much about it yet. I go back to Mayo Clinic in December. They have me on Azithromycin and Prednisone every day.
