Dear Friends,Would you do me the honor of reading this rather radical proposal? My heart has been so deeply struck by the ongoing suffering of the 3.8 million survivors of the great earthquake in Pakistan and Kashmir who, even after losing their homes, everything they own, and in so many cases family members as well, now have to face the coming winter with little or no shelter. I have just initiated a very simple, inexpensive, and straightforward project that may be of enormous help to save the lives of tens of thousands of people.I hope this may strike a chord for you as well.Thank you so very much,Much love, ---------------------------------------------------------

Question:

Is it actually possible to help save the lives of two people who are struggling to survive exposure in the aftermath of the Pakistani/Kashmiri earthquakefor just one dollaror am I slightly delirious?

Answer:

Yes!!

On both accounts.* * * * * * * * * *

Not only is it is possible but we can do it right now!PLEASE NOTE: If any photos do not show up or the type is disturbed in any way,you can read this entire letter with the photos by clicking on the following link,<http://www.life-energy.net/EarthquakeRelief.pdf>

It is not every day that we have a chance to make a gigantic differencein another person's life at a very small costand have the opportunity to gift a total stranger in dire need with our caring.* * * * * * * * * *We can make a difference - right now - in real time.* * * * * * * * * *It is hard to hear about one more global disaster without needing to tune out the suffering. How much can any of us do? Even when we do donate money to the tsunami survivors or the victims of Katrina, it often feels like our contributions can disappear into a black hole of bureaucratic confusion and limitless need and we don't really know, when or even if, our donations served in any of the ways that we had hoped.* * * * * * * * * *

I am writing to you because you are a friend and because it is not every day that one dollar, yes, four quarters or ten dimes can actually save a life, or even the lives of two people. When the UN said that over 500,000 homes have been demolished by the quake and "3.8 million people are homeless in Kashmir and Pakistan" (that's the entire combined population of Chicago, Boston, and Seattle as of July 2004) - and that after four weeks the relief efforts are still "totally inadequate," "the cold winter weather is starting to move in", and "there are not enough tents in the entire world to provide for the people in need," I just wanted to sink my head into my pillow and not come out until it was over.

Well, the news of this profound disaster may be slipping from the headlines, but it is not over for the millions of survivors, and they are fighting through the rain and the cold of the night to get through this every single day. "There but for fortune..................................Å go you and I"

I thought to myself this is way too overwhelming to think about at all and how littleif anything one person can actually do to make a difference.

And then I had a lightening bolt realization that I actually needed to think "small" rather than big.

I needed to make this situation - this catastrophe - small enough that I could get my mind around it and maybe then I could be of help in a real way - right now - when it counts. The relief agencies have by necessity focused on the big picture, providing massive amounts of food, and medicines, and water as well as tents for the quake victims but the number of tents actually needed as shelter is regrettably a short-term impossibility. There are just not enough tents available in the entire world in the quantities needed and the cold weather is coming in.

I thought that in the enormity of this astonishing crisis, in all the chaos and confusion, perhaps there were solutions being overlooked that could offer the survivors significant relief and protection for weeks, if not months, and potentially help keep them from dying of overexposure.

I went right over to REI and also looked online for heat reflective emergency survival blankets to see if any of them would be durable enough that they could be used in a dire long-term survival situation. Many of these types of blankets are more applicable for one use only survival situations and are not particularly strong. I bought several products and tested each of them but only one passed the test. Most of the blankets would have been useless in real life conditions over weeks or months of use. I stretched and tore at each of them. I tried to set fire to them. I stood out by the water on a cold windy night in a tee shirt wrapped in them, and there was one product from Adventure Medical Kits called the Heatsheets® Two Person Emergency Survival Blanket that passed with flying colors. Their survival blankets are surprisingly durable, refoldable, fully waterproof, fire-resistant, and reflect up to 90% of body heat !! Unfolded they are 96 x 59 inches which is quite large enough to envelope two adults with life-giving warmth.

I called Adventure Medical Kits immediately and spoke with Myer, who is their Marketing Director, and asked whether his company would consider selling their entire inventory of these emergency survival blankets at cost to ship to Kashmir/Pakistan for the quake relief effort. Adventure Medical Kits specializes in wilderness survival medicine. They offer well thought out emergency kits designed by Dr. Weiss, an emergency department physician and a leader in the field of modern wilderness and outdoor medicine. The company had not even been approached by the relief agencies so here was this extraordinary resource, entirely below the radar, and it was available to the people in need right now. The UN had just announced that "tens of thousands of people could die over the next few weeks to a month due to hypothermia and exposure" and that was probably an understatement. was really cooperative and called me back right away. He did not have any significant quantities in stock and so he put me directly in touch with Deigan, CEO of AMFInc., which is the leading supplier of quality thermal-reflective products in the United States and the manufacturer of Heatsheets®. These thermal reflective Heatsheets® blankets are an essential part of American Medical Kits. They are also used by over 500,000 marathon runners a year to avoid hypothermia after an event. has been tremendously helpful and we are now poised to put into production this very week 26,000 Heatsheets® Two Person Emergency Survival Blankets that could be in Islamabad by mid-November. Both Adventure Medical Kits and AMFInc. Heatsheets® have been fantastic and we can now get these remarkable blankets to Pakistan for just one dollar each including the air freight!!!. WOW!!!!! These blankets sell in the stores for over 5 dollars each so everyone is really stretching to make this work. <http://www.adventuremedicalkits.com <http://www.adventuremedicalkits.com/> > and <http://www.heatsheets.com <http://www.heatsheets.com/> >.Right after my first conversation with , I immediately called Mercy Corps, which is one of the most respected disaster relief agencies in the world - and was founded right here in Seattle - and spoke to Schwartzberg, their material aid assistance officer, to ask whether Mercy Corps would consider serving as a conduit to get these Heatsheets® emergency survival blankets to the quake survivors in the Himalayas and reviewed with him my home testing procedure. was very open to the idea and mentioned that Mercy Corps had over 100 of their own people on the ground there already and he would need to check in with the Mercy Corps teams in Pakistan and find out whether they had the facility, staff, and time to take this on as a project. I told him that I am fully committed to mount an immediate campaign to bring in the funds to Mercy Corps in order to make this acquisition possible. I am thrilled to announce that called me back to say that his ground team was very responsive and highly encouraged by the possibility of receiving 26,000 Heatsheets® emergency survival blankets and wanted to go forward with this ASAP and so we have a go.

Here is a contribution that we can make and know exactlywhere our money is going. We can track and visualize the journey of every dollar we send from beginning to end.

Each one dollar we givebuys a very large emergency survival blanket *thatwill provide life-giving warmth to two peopleand help shield them from the harshness of the mountain weather* that same dollar also includes air shipment directly to Pakistan

....and each donation will give the relief agencies some much needed time to bring in additional supplies and semi-permanent shelters. These heat reflective blankets weigh only 2.9 ounces each. They are light enough that we can ship them out by air and massive numbers of them can be transported even by mule back into the high and remote mountain villages that the trucks can't reach. I am so encouraged by the response from Adventure Medical Kits, AFMInc. Heatsheets®, and the Mercy Corps team. When I stood out by the water on a chilly and windy night late last week in my tee shirt, within 5 minutes the blanket raised the ambient temperature by so much that I actually got hot in there. Amazing!

These 26,0000 Heatsheets® emergency survival blankets can offer some immediate and very real hope to as many as fifty-two thousand people!! Each dollar we raise sends a two person emergency survival blanket to where it needs to go and if we do manage to raise the entire $26,000, we will be able to ship 26,000 Heatsheets® emergency survival blankets and just possibly help save the lives of as many as 52,000 people. Each unit will find its way to the people in need, under the auspices of one of the most respected and efficient relief agencies in the world. By mid-November, there could be thousands of people, if not tens of thousands wrapped in our prayers, keeping warm and knowing that there are people on the other side of the world who care about their lives.

In a world that seems to have in so many ways lost its humanityand the capacity for simple human kindness, the following is what your investment could bring tothe people of Kashmir and Pakistan from the open heartsof people in this country who still choose to care:If you can contribute ten dollars

You will be able to provide life-giving warmth and protection to as many as 20 children, men and women.
