The Alchemist

I knew a golden man

who had a golden wife

for all the awesome privilege

he led a silver life

his fortunes were unsteady

his slippers made of tin

and climbing up to bed at night

they made an awful din

quicksilver were his daughters

of iron was his son

but by a copper-headed beauty

his fate was then undone

all metals became coins to him

to pay a lover's wiles

her flesh seemed made of petals

and oh! her flower-secret smiles!

he smelted and he melted

distilling down to lead

an alchemy of error

that left him almost dead

his tinctures and elixirs

were spilled upon the earth

till the proper putrefaction

gave homuncular rebirth

today he is a wizard

who wears a cotton gown

who cannot touch a metal

or smile without a frown.

Alice,

How could this be more perfect? Do I have your permission to read this at the art show opening (with appropriate acknowledgement, of course)!

Once again, "spot on!"

Love,

Miriam

p.s. Would you say that the alchemist experienced "dark night of the soul?" Did he lose his gold in the end? or perhaps we can never really lose our gold, even if it hides as mere hints of sparkles in the darkest of dark leads? I am also curious about the symbolism of cotton.....

Ah! Cotton is humility??? detachment from illusion?

curious-er and curious-er, (or as my spell check warns, "curio user" and "curio user")

Dear Miriam,

> Does anyone know of myths or meaning or symbols around metal?>

If it's of any help, I can give you the Traditional Chinese Medicine "5 elements" associations with the metal element. In short, it is boundaries, autumn and grief. It is also the Lung meridian, breathing air energy in. And Large Intestine meridian, breathing out. Oh yes, Metal is the daughter element of Earth.

As for a creative job, I am wondering: would there be a market for poetry reading, story telling, etc at socail events. Marriages, baptems, birthday parties, etc, etc?

Thanks, Artemis, I was on line last night trying to find something about

metal as one of the five elements in Chinese thought... partly because it

was the first thing I thought of when Miriam posted her question, and

secondly because when I thought of it I remembered a feng shui " consultant "

telling me once that I was/am a " metal, " and I couldn't remember what if

anything else she said about it (and of course I have no idea, really, if

she was correct, because I don't know how they figger those things, lol).

Autumn is my favorite season, though. :)

Dear Artemis and Kione,

I immediately saw metal in the earth when my poet friend first mentioned it. Since I have posted about both my job and then asking for "metal" references, I am astonished at the connection between the two. Unconsciously, I wasn't making a conscious connection when I posted about metals, but you know how it goes....*wink* ; )

My favorite season is autumn also....grief=loss?.....boundaries=definitely, working on that one!!

I will breathe......good reminder, thank you.

Miriam

p.s. your job idea is interesting - a friend called and asked if i were interested in doing tours...in new orleans that would probably mean "voodoo tours," cemetery tours, etc....am doin' much thunkin' and much not thunkin'.....i am tempted to just float in my river for a while - see where it goes.....; )
