Guest guest
Hi all, Just wondering if anyone who has been on prednisone has also developed oral thrush or candidiasis (yeast infection). My Dad seems to have developed this condition over the weekend and I am waiting to contact his respirologist tomorrow morning. Poor guy has a very sore and dry mouth with loss of taste sensation and general " bad taste " in his mouth. I understand that it is treatable with antifungal meds but that it has the potential to become quite serious in immunocompromised individuals. Anything you know would be appreciated. anne (dad ipf 03/06)
Guest guest
Anne, I had thrush early on, after about a month on prednisone. I had similar symptoms to your Dad. It was treated with the "Swish and Swallow" oral Nystatin for 7 days and it hasn't come back since. I'm keeping my fingers crossed. I also did some research on my own and have started eating the new "Activia" yogurt every day. It's got the specific yogurt cultures that help to prevent yeast infections. The regular yogurts with regular active cultures are not as effective. There are also supplements you can take that will accomplish the same thing if he's not a yogurt guy. I know most men don't like yogurt. Definitely give his dr a call, he'll want to treat it right away so it doesn't spread throughout his system. Hope he feels better soon. I put up with this nonsense from the prednisone because it seems to be coninuing to improve portions of my PFT. I'm gaining ground and it's worth it to me!! I realize it doesn't work this way for all or even for most but for me the prednisone is a positive! Take care. Beth IPF 06/06Draw close. Hold hands. Life is short. God is good. Guest guest
Anne, It is common to us. It can also be caused by inhalers and nebulizer meds. If he is using those, it is important to rinse your mouth out afterwards. There is medicine to rinse and spit...and oral medications. It is miserable!!! I wish I had someone like you to look after me. You should get a good daughter award!
