I am still having really bad foot pain. Saw my rheumy yesterday, he

now thinks I probably have a stress fracture in my foot. He told me

these are common with RA does this mean I get to have these again.

I have to go for a bone scan of the foot and then he wants to see me

back in 2 weeks and we will discuss what to do. Also told me I may

want to start thinjking of another job. I just can't imagine not

being with the kids all the time. I love my job have done in for 13

years. Oh well I will stop whining I just am a little scared of

what all is going on.

Thanks for letting me whine to you guys

Hi Angie,

I'm sorry about your foot pain. This is common in RA, as I found out

awhile ago. Althea, has been having a time with her foot, she also

has a stress fracture. I will keep you in my prayers, Tawny

I have never heard of Biofreeze, what is that exactly and where would I get

this? He cannot seem to explain the pain but says it is his whole foot not

just the bottom and goes to the ankle. We currently don't have a neuro or

orthotist, he is starting with a new PT in a couple weeks. I did suggest he

try some foot stretches when we got home with shoes off. Definitely need to

get new sneakers for him. I was also trying to cut his toenails tonight (boy

were they bad) but his feet as so sensitive he does not like me touching

them so clipping is quite a struggle. Would the biofreeze help with the

sensitivity or it just a cooling agent? Will speak with dr next week and

see what he says also.

Thx

Lori,

Can he describe the pain? Ask him if his feel like they are burning. Burning

is a type of pain. To stop the burning, take shoes off and use some

BioFreeze or any cold lotion. I've had this my whole life, I also walk on

cold tiles to cool my feet, or soak in cold water and my orthotist did make

the last topcover in a special material that helps.

Changing shoes throughout the day can help. Massaging can help. (Your son

can learn to self-massage - even with something as simple as a tennis ball).

I doubt AFOs will help with foot pain, since the pain is on the bottom of

the feet (I am assuming, that's where the burn starts) I also have some

Spenco liners which help too. But no AFOs, because they are for footdrop.

As for his shoes - they should be replaced about every 4 months - and have

plenty of room in the toe and metatarsal area, while snug in the heels.

There are medications that can help - but don't know if you want to go that

route. Your neurologist, orthotist, phys should all work together for your

son. My orthotist also has certain brands and lasts of shoes that he

recommends for his clients.

Lori,

I bet orthotics or AFOs would help your son a lot, esp if he is having foot

pain. There are many new types of AFOs and orthotics try to find one that helps

him that he will wear. My orthotist, Wade Bader, has a AFOcalled the noodle that

has very little skin contact. I like it a lot. He has a couple of you tube

videos of it if you are interested. He's in Tampa but will work through your

local orthotist.

I have alternating hot and cold feet such that I have socks all over the

house... When my feet get hot, I take them off. The pain is pretty bad.

None of the medications that I have used do anything for the cold feet.

Inverting your body, that is placing the feet above thew heart, preferably

against a wall, so the feet can get higher.

The blood is then forced out and replaced with new blood when you again put your

feet on the floor.

his takes a few minutes, but it usually has some effect.

When they get cold, it is sometimes necessary to heat them up in water

I would replace his shoes first. See if that helps. It always helped me as

a kid.

Ok need some advice, went to the fair with my son today, he could only walk

about 15-20 minutes before his feet hurt so much he had to sit down. We

really having a good time and it was a shame he just couldn't enjoy it so

much. so my question is this, would AFOs help this? He only wears splints

at night currently to help stretch his tendons. His current sneakers are

about a year old, should we replace them possibly? We are going to the

physiatrist next week so will mention this to him but was wondering what

has

helped other people with the foot pain.

After foot surgery in the Spring, the surgeon told me to wear a compression

stocking to reduce swelling. Almost instant relief from the nerve pain.

While the sweling has gone down, I'll still put on the compression stocking

if I'm going to be horizontal for any length of time.

Hi Lori,

We had our visit with Dr. Shy and the talented staff today. Much to my

surprise, (and complete dismay, it was very much agreed that it was time

for Zack to be fit for AFOs. He tried the Blue Rockers like I have.

After walking the halls for a good amount of time, he very strongly felt

they helped him walk much easier and everyone in the staff felt it would

be so much easier for Zack in school and any time he had a lot of

walking to do. They said he would not need them all the time, but he

would know when it was right. Maybe the same is true for son too.

Dismay? Yes, it was one of those moments when a parent feels all the

weight of passing on an inherited disorder to their child. The

generations up to me did not know about this. I was already an uncle 4

times over before I was diagnosed, so my bro and sis did not know

anything other than the " Griffiths Foot " ran in the family, but neither

of them had any signs of it. So then the heavy guilt and weight of this

really came crashing down on my today hearing those words. Was I

narcissistic in having children? What was I thinking?

I know this, my life would be nothing without my family. I guess I have

to channel this more into the drive to stopping this so no more

generations have this.

Wow Lori. Sounds just like Zack! His PT used to use horse hair brushes on him to

try and desensitize him. Yesterday, Dr. Shy had to let him do his own pin pricks

to determine his feeling because he could not tolerate Dr. Shy doing it. He

rarely complains of foot pain, just fatigue. Like today. We just spent the day

at the Detroit Zoo and now he is flat in bed. His little bro is aching to go to

the waterpark in our hotel and he has NO interest, so we are going without him,

and he is just fine with that. I on the other hand, know exactly what your son

means about the whole foot hurting. I often wake up in the morning and the

bottom of my foot feels like I was on them all night, but other than that, it is

like every joint, muscle and bone in my feet ache. I have found little to help

but get off them and elevate.

Hi Lori,

What a time we had trying to get Zack out of bed today! He was in tremendous

pain all night, all over - back, hips, legs... Could not get comfortable in bed,

on the floor... I woke up and he was curled up in a chair with his pillow.

Thursday was our day at WSU, then we spent the day walking the Detroit Zoo... I

guess it was just too much. We tried to get him up for breakfast and a ride to

his Grandparent's old neighborhood and some other errands, and finally gave up.

He is 16 and his cousins were still here at the hotel, so the other 3 of us

headed out and did most of what we wanted, and then got him in time to go to a

bbq at my sister-in-law's house. Funny thing is, we were thinking of stopping at

one of our favorite places in Lancaster on the way home on Monday!

That is GREAT news about the diner near you. Good luck! One of our other members

is working on something that might be big news for another regional chain on the

same night. Keep your fingers crossed!

going to CHOP possibly instead. cannot stand all these dr's and therapies

etc so we try and keep it to a minimum. He qualified for a study at CHOP but

refuses to do it. We are heading for Lancaster tomorrow morning (lots of walking

around) and of course he has been in so much pain these last few days. Put new

inserts into his shoes but going to get him new sneakers tonight (fingers

crossed) that will help.
