Guest guest
Erwin, Whenever cholangitis episodes hit me there are no nose, sinus, throat symptoms along with the chills and fever. Other symptoms that usually go along with it is abdominal pain, normally in the upper right quadrant and overall weakness (tired, weak, blah). Don't like to be guessing about what you have, but with the flu-like symptoms you describe that's what it sounds like. Still a good idea to check in with your doc. Guest guest
Bill, Thanks for the note. I followed your advice and called the doctor, who confirmed there are a lot of people with the flu, and that since most cases are viral there is no point to taking an antibiotic. He shared your assessment that it is unlikely I am having a cholangitis episode. Thanks to everyone else who weighed in on this -- your comments were very helpful. Guest guest
Erwin-- I had the exact same symptoms the weekend after Christmas. Had to miss work two days w/fever. I chalked it up to a cold that had settled in my back & chest, but now you've got me wondering. I'm on antibiotics constantly (have been since '87 colectomy surgery). I tried to go off for a couple days to give my system a break from antibiotics and then the above symptoms set in. I started back on my antibiotics on the 3rd day of symptoms & they miraculously began disappearing real quick. Hmm... Guest guest
C., You might consider asking your doctor whether they have any objection to your taking " probiotic " supplements to help your g.i. tract deal with the consequences of taking antibiotics every day. There are a variety of formulas/products that help restore intestinal balance—help you reacquire the " good " bacteria you lose when you take antibiotics over the long term. For example, I take a product sold by Jarrow; I take 1-2 pills after lunch and again after dinner. Its stored in the refrigerator (its just a small, ubobtrusive bottle). But most of the major supplement companies sell these products, and they are probably all pretty good. As with everything, it would be advisable to check with a doctor first, but I have no hesitation in recommending you look into it. Guest guest
Erwin & Group: I never heard of " probiotic " . Would this help w/my duodenal ulcer, too, I wonder? I've really been having a horrible time w/nausea. I was unable to sleep last night. Got up & read for 2 1/2 hr. Prevacid, which I was taking for my ulcer, causes me problems--makes me tense and not myself at all. My Mayo dr. has been trying to get hold of me ( & I him) he's thinking of switching me to Prilosec. Has anyone heard of that one? I'm about ready (seriously) to give up on trying to eat. Eating small amounts, but miserable shortly thereafter. Sticking to pudding & graham crackers today. Anybody have any suggestions??? Guest guest
C. I was on prilosec many years ago. At that time...it was only legal for short term use in the united states (on one month, off for 3 months) I had a hard time sleeping when I was on the med, and I think it might be what caused some of my liver damage. But...at the time that I was put on it, my stomache was VERY bad (vomiting blood) and it healed it up quickly. ------------------------------------------------------------------------
Guest guest
-- Oh no, that's scary. Just what I want is more liver damage. I certainly don't need anything to keep me awake either. Hopefully it won't. The dr. put me on it today. Time will tell...... ------------------------------------------------------------------------
Guest guest
That's interesting that you would mention " rifampin " b/c during my recent 9 day hospital stay my dr. started me on rifampin for the itching. Ins doesn't cover it and I didn't see a huge improvement in itching so I probably won't be taking it. ------------------------------------------------------------------------
