Of course I take insulin ( you don't, do you?) so that can mitigate any little slip I make. I do like desserts and usually split one with a friend or have a single bite of theirs. Judicious choosing, that's the trick. I understand cruise food is very tempting so good luck!
Guest guest
Hi Elka, I see you eat chocolate by your signature line. What brand do you eat? Is there any that is low sugar/carb? Thanks,
Guest guest
I am going on a cruise sailing July 1 out of New York to Canada. This will be a five day cruise with all of the lavish food available including a 24 hour pizza parlor. Does anyone have any hints as to how to control my diet during the five days of temptation? Has anyone been on a cruise lately and been able to do OK? I am looking forward to this trip with a lot of anticipation but also am concerned that I will go crazy for the five days. Any hints will be helpful. Erwin PS: I am type 2, diagnosed in April of 1999 with an HbA1c of 10 then. Last test, in November of 1999 it was 4.7. I control it with diet and exercise only, no medication. I will be going for another HbA1c test towards the end of July and seeing my CDE following the test, probably in August. Guest guest
Oh boy, Erwin. That's a tough one. Since your next bloodwork is late July and the cruise is early July, you know that any gustatorial transgressions will show up on your HbA1c. You might want to take along " Complete Book of Food Counts " by Corinne T. Netzer, to help you make the best choices. You might also want to have your doctor place you on 500 mg glucophage (Metformin) for every meal containing carbohydrates right away so that you can get accustomed to them before the cruise. (They tend to cause intestinal discomfort the first 2-3 weeks.) Or you can just go all-out and then jump back on the wagon when you return home, and just explain to the doctor about the cruise when you get your results. Your numbers last time around were so incredibly good, kiddo, that you're surely not going to do yourself much harm by a short foray into Carbohydrate Heaven. One trick I learned, though, is to head for the salad bar first, to satisfy your hunger. Also, avoid the breads and rolls and desserts. On the more troublesome foods, such as pasta and rice, just try to graze on them ... not a double helping. Susie

I order whatever I fancy, but I almost never eat the full serving. Sometimes, I eat half, sometimes even less. Very rarely do I eat it all. I almost always order something from all of the courses. I like appetizers, so it is not very unusual for me to order 2 or three appetizers and the main course and possibly a dessert. I just eat less of each thing. Also for breakfast, I go to the dining room rather than the buffet. I order poached eggs with smoked salmon and fruit but no bagel. If I don't like the fruit, I skip it. Almost all the fruit juices are made with sugar. I never go to the late night buffet. I eat nothing after 9 pm. Where are you going? Have fun! Rosebuds are good, because I can limit the amount I eat more readily. I can ignore chocolate most of the time, but when it comes to the time of the month that I would have had a period, there is no stopping me! Guest guest
>Type2, Glyburide 5mg, chromium, diet, exercise and chocolate> ****FYI, it has been shown that glyburide type drugs will wear out your pancreas by forcing it to make insulin, so that insulin injections are the inevitable, and eating sugar will compound this problem. This has been shown in numerous studies. Chromium picolinate has been linked to cancer, also FYI, Barb -------------- RAINBOW FARM UNLTD. Could you please give me 3 or more studies for each claim from independent sources (i.e. those not funded by pharmaceutical companies, either directly or indirectly) Thanks Elka Type2, Glyburide 5mg, chromium, diet, exercise and chocolate
Guest guest
Hi Elka, I eat chocolate too. I can't bear to deprive myself of it - I sympathise with the time of the month thing when I find chocolate a necessity. I too eat ordinary chocolate and I find that four squares of Cadbury's Diary Milk after a meal doesn't cause me any problems. Enjoy your chocolate! I probably sound silly now but what's a YMMV Type 1. Re: Cruise At 07:04 PM 6/22/00 -0400, you wrote: >Hi Elka, >I see you eat chocolate by your signature line. What brand do you eat? Guest guest
I thought I would have to give up chocolate. Then I read Dr. Atkins book. He suggested chocolate that was around 70% cocoa. I like the taste much better (have always been a fan of dark chocolate) and it doesn't mess with my blood sugar much.
