Guest guest
, Are you also taking Humalog, which is a fast acting insulin? Cereal is a lot of carbs. You would probably do much better eating protien and a smaller amount of carbs-say a piece of toast If you t ake humalog, you need to check your BS often and if your BS is running too high 2 hours after taking it, that means you havae not taken enough. Cereal with milk means I take 3 units of humalog, whereas an egg and 1 toast means 1 unit. Howevver, everyone is differant and a bow of cereal may mean you have to take 5 units. It is better to count your carbs dose accordingly. Theorically, 1 unit of humalog should lower your BS about 50 points-this is for 15 Gm of carbs. Cereal is at least 30-35 carbs with milk. lantis Hi , My Dr. has me taking the lantis in the morning with that shot. I usually run high during the dayand he thought taking it this way would help. Normally I have a bowl of cereal for breakfast. I was draining to much this morning and new milk was the last thing I needed in my stomach. I hope you people aren't planning on starving me on this new diet. I weigh 110 lbs and am 5 foot 4; not sure if that factors into anything or not. Guest guest
Listen to Harry Lynda about calories, fats, meats, and carbs. He knows his stuff. Harry. explain this to her a little more about how insulin only works on carbs and show her more information on calories being obtained from meats and fats that will not effect her blood sugar/make it go high but will keep her weight good. She will find this information useful. Lynda, keep asking questions and gathering the data from us... and keep re-reading it to get it to click and come back and ask us more questions as they come up... Guest guest
pat is correct Lynda. in many diabetics it is a form of neuropathy that can be reversed with tight blood sugar control. in your case lynda, I am betting it would reverse if this is what is going on. Guest guest
humulin nph and regular have one of the most vicious peek in them that it makes blood sugar control in diabetics impossible. I.E you are brittle diabetic on humulin nph and regular. On lantus and humalog and carb counting there is no such thing as a brittle diabetic and I am proof of it. BTW humulin nph and regular are so old you don't even need a prescription for them anymore... you can purchase them over the counter at wallmart. Guest guest
yes, is right-it might be just lactose intolerance and an allergy to eggs. You could try soy milk, but check it for sugar level as many companies add the sugar to improve the taste. Guest guest
Harry, Man, you sure do suggest hi tech research! What would all those clinics and labs do if more folks just stepped back a few paces and started using common sense? One of my sons is also Lactose intolerant. We used soy based milk substitutes. My Ex was also lactose intolerant and, she also had a problem with soy milk. We found some rice milk which she could use with good results. The rice products are available from Wal-Mart. If they don't have it in stock they can order it. Now, I have no idea about the carbs in these products. Guess I should do a little investigating. I will report findings. Now, as for the eggs, the dehydrated egg products do not seem to have this problem and Barb could use them. They don't taste real good but they are better than nothing (maybe). I believe the egg thing is independent of the milk thing. I am well acquainted with lactose intolerance, since my daughter had it all of her life, only to be diagnosed with doctor visits and two differential lab tests when she was 15 years of age. She suffered severe colic as a baby, and she never liked ice cream as a child, which I thought was strange. Finally, the diagnosis was made after several doctor visits and several lab tests. Her problem is solved today. She just avoids milk in any thing. If one wishes to diagnose lactose intolerance all one has to do is drink a glass of milk, say 8-12 ounces. Wait about 30 minutes, and if severe stomach pains happen along with resulting nausea and vomiting, then the diagnosis is made with the cost of a single glass of milk alone. I still recommend you have your physician get the lab tests to rule out Celiac Disease. lantis > > > > > >Hi , > > > >My Dr. has me taking the lantis in the morning with that shot. Guest guest
Whereas Humalog one unit can handle carbs and cause the glucose level to drop around 50 points in non-insulin resistant folks, each person needs to figure out for themselves just how many points their glucose level will drop per unit of Humalog. This is essential for a person to know, if they wish to run tight glucose levels, which can only be determined by using your glucose monitor. I recommend a person try an experiment to determine just how many points of glucose will drop with one unit of Humalog. To do this be sure you push your glucose level up to around 160-180 and be sure it is stabilized at this level for around 20 or 30 minutes, which can only be determined by checking your blood sugar with the monitor. After you have ascertained this high glucose level is stable inject 2 units of Humalog and take a reading around 40-60 minutes later. What is your glucose level now? If your glucose level is 60 which is less than 100 points from 160 divide this number by 2 which is the number of units of humalog insulin injected. The answer is a 50 point drop in your glucose level for each unit of Humalog injected. Be sure to have some glucose tablets on hand to prevent staying at this low or going lower. Repeat this experiment seveeral times on different days and several times to get a better estimate of the effect of one unit of humalog on your glucose level. After many experiments I have figured out that one unit of Humalog will reduce my glucose level by 7.5 points on average, and this does not vary more than a half point from an average drop of 7 or 8 points per unit of Humalog. Those who do not suffer with insulin resistance, as I do, probably will not get these lower numbers or this lower range of variability, since large or great numbers of drops per unit usually also carry withem a wider range of variability. Also for the non-insulin resistant person 1 unit of humalog may handle 15, or more grams of carbs. In my case, being insulin resistant, I require approximately one unit of Humalog to handle two grams of carbs, something one learns over time with trial and error. As a general rule of thumb, the amount of short acting insulin like Humalog will constitute approximately 50% of your daily insulin dose in total and the long acting insulin Lantus will constitute the other 50%. These ranges for the short acting insulin and the long acting insulin may vary from 40% to 60% depending on your physiology and diet and exercise routine. I am just throwing out some ball park figures here, and this cannot be determined without trial and practice on your part to figure out the doses that are right for you. Also this may change as the seasons change or your physiology changes, such as happens when you have an infection. lantis > > > Hi , > > My Dr. has me taking the lantis in the morning with that shot. Guest guest
To see if you have an allergy to eggs just try a simple experiment and let us know how it goes. Eating only egg, say three or four of them in any form you like say boiled, scrambled or fried, come to think of it, it would be better if you just ate them boiled with salt and pepper to taste and see what happens within an hour time, we are talking about 60 minutes here. Three or four may be too many so try two and have an extra one on hand just in case it is needed to get you full. Drink only water during this time. If you get nauseous, have stomach pains, develop diarrhea or vomit, just let us know. If you do have these symptoms on eggs and water alone, then you are probably allergic to something in the eggs. The last time I looked, eggs do not contain lactose. lantis > > > > > >Hi , > > > >My Dr. has me taking the lantis in the morning with that shot. Guest guest
actually I agree with this 99% accept only inject 1 unit of humalog, not two. The reason I say this is you want to know how much 1 unit of humalog lowers your sugar, not 2 units. The starting number for how much 1 unit of H lowers your sugar is 50 points, is what most docs start you at, and from there, like you suggest harry, you can conduct an experiment to see how much 1 unit of H really does lower your sugar. For me, 1 unit of H lowers my sugar 30 to 35 points and not 50. Regards, lantis > > > Hi , > > My Dr. has me taking the lantis in the morning with that shot. Guest guest
If the milk is originally white before adding things to it like chocolate, then it is bad for a diabetic. Milk is milk and practically the same goat or cow or otherwise whetther it is low fat high fat or no fat at at all has around 10 or 11 grams of carbs per 8 ounces of milk. lantis > > > > > > > > > > > >Hi , > > > > > > > >My Dr. has me taking the lantis in the morning with that shot. Guest guest
I think and you are right here. One unit of Humalog would probably be a lot safer to try. I was just in a hurry and figured that bumping the glucose level up higher and using 2 units of Humalog would give more numbers to work with in figuring an average with fewer experiments. If only one unit of Humalog is used, I would recommend a lot more experiments, say 5-7 at least to figure an average. lantis > > > > > > Hi , > > > > My Dr. has me taking the lantis in the morning with that shot. Guest guest
Hi , I take 15 units in the morning and 8 units at supper and 8 units of the Lantis with my morning shot. I will ask him about transferring the lantis to night. My girlfriends father is also taking lantis and he takes his at bedtime. Do you snack during the day also with the carb diet? Tim picked up two 10 count packets for my purse and car and the big bottle of glucose tablets at Walmart today. I think he said they are fruit punch.
