Dear RA Family:

Regarding prednisone weight gain...

Every year for the past three years when I have had a bout with pneumonia or

severe bronchial asthma, I have taken prednisone (the miracle worker for me..no

pain whatsoever...when I have been on it). There was never a weight gain until

this last November when I had another 6 -7 week bout with pneumonia and was put

on it.....perhaps this is the longest time I ever was on it though having been

tapered off earlier before. Then I was taking the prednisone eye drops for

three weeks with the business with my eye(don't know if that counts or was

enough of a dosage to count). Since the beginning of December with the bulk in

the past week and a half or so...I have put on 20

lbs...frightening....especially since it took me most of last year to lose 40

lbs to be wiped out so suddenly. This has been even with cutting back on my

regular foods that I eat and going to things like chicken soup w/veggies (no

added salt and veggies are fresh). It seems that with the extra weight

gain...the IBS

has kicked up big time...it seemed to be under somewhat of a control

prior...with occasional flare ups. I know that insomnia has become more

frequent for me now and I have had to step up my inhalers (3) since the

pneumonia. My feet and ankles are swelling big time and the lasix is not keeping

it completely under control. Wonder if all this is tied in...in some way? I

see my Internist on the 19th and the new pulmonary DR on the 3rd. Maybe there

will be some answers.

/a...you sent me information on the iritis....could this all be tied

into that if RA or some other auto-immune disease is rearing it's ugly head and

joining in with the FMS and COPD?

Thanks for bearing with me...I usually don't go on about what my problems are as

you well know as I watch and read what others are going through and try to pick

up what will help me either by my taking control or speaking to the DR about it.

Take care all...you are in my thoughts and prayers daily.

It is all tied in. I did not gain weight at first but have been on for

various for a bout 10years ( amazing huh?) I have gained about 60 lbs in

that time. Have tried to get off both pred and weight.

Soft hugs,
