Guest guest
Yes, I am and also to certain smells too. I really hate to get in a crowd of people and get on public transportation because of strong scents, it just really gives me a headache and makes me ill. hugs, Lianne mumheymum6 wrote: I have a very difficult time with sensitivity to noise. My son always has a stuffy nose due to hayfever, sinus, whatever. He breathes very loudly through his nose (at least to me it seems that way). Last night at the supper table I wanted to eat at the kitchen counter just to avoid the noise. Same thing in church with his breathing. He fancies himself as a drummer, so whether it's his knuckles or a pencil he is constantly tapping something. Drives me absolutely INSANE! My oldest hums while he eats. My daughter talks from the minute her feet hit the floor in the morning until she goes to sleep at night (actually, they all 3 do that). The people at work are very social and it's very rare that it's quiet in the office. I have great difficulty in meetings when there are multiple conversations going on. I find it very hard to focus on the conversation I should be listening too because of the extra conversations. All of this makes me feel like my skin is literally crawling and can cause headaches. I just read something that really surprised me on a website I found: "People with FMS can be sensitive to changes in barometric pressure and temperature. Rain beating on the windowpane may feel as if it were beating on the walls of your cells. The noise emitted by fluorescent lights can drive you crazy, and you may have to avoid overcrowded areas such as malls or cities. FMS sensitizes nerve endings as well as the rest of the autonomic nervous system. " My reaction was OMG, that's me! Is anyone else oversensitive to noise like this? -t 1. Guest guest
Yeah, I smell all sorts of things no one else does. My MIL has her cats downstairs, and mine stay here upstairs, with us...I about GAG to death every time I'm anywhere near her room, because she only cleans her litterbox like once a week; I HAVE to do mine at LEAST once a day (preferably once an HOUR...but...). I always pick up on bad smells long before anyone else does. I can taste milk that will start tasting sour in a day or two -- when everyone else thinks it's fine. I can taste, smell, hear, see, and FEEL other things that no one else does -- and they all wonder if I'm going psycho, because I'm always saying, "Did you hear that?" "What is that STENCH??" "Someone needs to STOP SLAMMING THE DOOR ACROSS THE STREET!" *sigh* I've lsot my mind. They're right; I've officially lost my mind... ~E. Guest guest
I don't know what to say about the social situations for your band, but for at home you might try headphones people use for mowing lawns, using chainsaws etc to dampen the noise. Earplugs never worked for me because they don't seal my ear enough to deaden the noise. -t > Riddle me this Batman,..... I earn a living as a singer in a band. Guest guest
Ooooh - the flourescent lights humming drives me mad. I once had to work for over a week with the noise of a jackhammer tearing up a concrete drainage ditch right outside my office. That's enough to make anyone suffer. I wanted to cut my head off. (Better yet, cut the head off of the guy who decided it would be a good idea to do that during working hours. Right now they're repaving my street - when they're right in front of my house I can hear the machinery and feel it. The floor is vibrating. Creepy feeling. And I can't go out somewhere in the car to get away from it because they're blocking my driveway! http://www.elizabethblue.com http://www.midatlantichorror.org http://www.geocities.com/horrorwritersworkshop -----Original Message-----From: T Lee R and Jeri J Sent: Thursday, October 07, 2004 8:18 AMTo: Fibromyalgia_Support_Group Subject: Re: Sensitivity to noise? i cant stand the noise of florescent lights or escalators...anyone else hear those? lee A positive attitude may not solve all your problems, but it will annoy enough people to make it worth the effort
Guest guest
I can't stand certain strong scents, particularly those that smell "fake". I'm not sure how to explain that. I don't mind the smell of a flower garden if it comes from an actual flower garden, but the smell of flower or spring or garden scented things like detergent or dryer sheets (those are the worst) makes me feel ki'nd of sick. http://www.elizabethblue.com http://www.midatlantichorror.org http://www.geocities.com/horrorwritersworkshop -----Original Message-----From: Lianne Crisci Sent: Thursday, October 07, 2004 8:24 AMTo: Fibromyalgia_Support_Group Subject: Re: Sensitivity to noise?Yes, I am and also to certain smells too. Guest guest
Good Morning Everyone, Wow... I'm wondering what the connection is between Pain and noise tolerance. When I'm having a lot of pain I can't stand noise. I think because our apartment is so hot that I have a fan running most of the time and the " white noise " that is creates muffles a lot of noises that bother me. But on days where my nerves aren't frazzled and I can keep my pain under control... noise doesn't bother me very much (unless is loud rap type stuff coming from a neighbor or a vehicle beside mine on the road). Music is my life and I love almost every type of music and need it every day. I just can't imagine a day without music. When I need complete silence is when I'm concentrating on something important or trying to focus. As we all know how difficult fibro fog can make our lives and how much it prevents us from being able to focus. I can't work on any kind of paper work or trying to enter bills etc. into quicken if I have music or the TV on. I need absolute quiet other than my fan. What annoys me the most lately is one of the cats insists on going outside to what I refer to as " the portal " . The land between our basement apartment and the upstairs (where our entrance is). She wants to be out there constantly and meows rather loudly and insistently to the point where I have to squirt her with water from the spray bottle. Nothing is more persistent than a cat that wants something. And here's what I absolutely can't handle. When I'm on the computer... whether it's writing e-mail, or reading something... and the phone rings or hubby talks to me (more like asks me a question). My instinct is to yell... " Shut Up " but the nice person inside me stops me before I hurt his feelings. I've been like this for years and long before Fibro. I think my problem stems from my job before Fibro and my car accident made me stop working. I worked as a Computer Operations Analyst and had to solve computer problems at my desk. Every time the phone rang with someone needing my help I'd get soooo upset. The simple ringing of the phone or someone coughing, talking, laughing from a neighboring cubicle would make me lose my train of thought and where I was in the problem solving. Then I'd basically have to start from the beginning again. To me this was such a huge waste of my time and I felt like I was doing everything 100 times because of others. My brain has never been one to be able to focus with interruptions. I just can't do it and I don't know why. The other thing that can drive me around the bend is people reading over my shoulder. Seems I can't spell my own name if someone is watching me. Personally I think this comes from way back in my younger years and I'm sure a psychologist would be able to help me figure out what caused this and why it bothers me so much. I'm pretty sure it was from growing up with my grandmother and mother who were the most critical people I've ever known. As far as they were concerned, I don't think I could do anything right and needed their constant supervision and criticism. Now I don't deal well with criticism at all. I take it personally and I know that that is just wrong. But I tend to take everything personally... Ugggh... Yes.. I need to work on this problem of mine along with many others... lol. I think that may be my largest stumbling block in writing this book. I just don't think I can write well enough... thanks mom... after all.. I obviously don't even wash dishes properly in her eyes. It must be her way of dealing with her own insecurities... funny how these things are passed down from generation to generation. Yup.. I still have tons of personal issues to deal with and sort out. I think my psychologist was absolutely correct in telling me that we are all " a work in progress " . loving, gentle healing hugs, Norah (with issues .. hehehehe) Norah Bleazard - Burlington, Ontario Canada www.bleazard.net ~ www.janorlites.com E-MAIL= norah.fibroyahoo@... Guest guest
I too have the sensitivity to noises. Any loud or repetitive sounds make me want to SCREAM! ! ! ! Horns honking, dogs barking, phones, yikes!! I also hear cicadas chirping even when there are none. If I am in a place with a humming or droning sound, I cannot hear someone speaking even if I am looking directly at them. It is making me nuts. My ears hurt too and have some large white flaky things that come out occasionally. EWWWW!! What is that all about? To add to all that I repeatedly have been having sore throat and swollen glands in my neck. Right now my left side throat is sore and also the gland is swollen, I can hardly eat. (That could be a plus as I do need to lose a lot of weight) Also when I eat my right jaw pops and hurts. Back to the original problem though... Noises.... Yes, I do get so irritated that I would love to be boxed up in a place with NO one or nothing else there. Maybe I could get some reading done as the noises sure do break my concentration. I can't even think to add simple figures when distracted by noises. Gentle Hugs, Carolyn

I sometimes don't hear someone enter a room then get startled, other times the back ground of my African Grey makes me nuts, especially since she learned to whine like the puppies in my last litter and does it a billion times louder. My husband is coming home from Toronto right now and He is gonna want my attention, I am dreading the whole thing. I adore him, but I just am not up to the task of entertaining. DebiY. Guest guest
What is there to look forward to?? There is LIFE to look forward too!! You just have to make the determination that fibro is not going to rule your life. I know it is hard but you don't have to give up everything you enjoy. Okay, I know some things make the fibro hurt, but the way I look at it, I'm going to hurt regardless. So on weekends when I get the chance, do I pass up going out dancing, which I enjoy so much because of the fibro?? No!! It's something I enjoy and I refuse, absolutely REFUSE, to give up my life to this disease. You have to make a choice to fight for the life you want back. I'm not saying it is easy, it's not, but I sincerely believe it is possible. Okay, off my soap box N. -- In Fibromyalgia_Support_Group , " l_markham1 " <l_markham1@y...> wrote: > > I wonder the same thing...now that Im diagnosed what is there to look > forward to?
