Guest guest
Tony I wouldn't call it painful but there is a sort of cumulative discomfort as more samples are taken. As I was only expectiong the guy to take one sample by the time he got to 7 I asked how many more he was taking and was quite relieved that he said 8. It might be a good plan to ask at the beginning so that you are prepared. As with a lot of this stuff it's undignified. All part of life's rich pattern. Good luck. I passed blood in my urine overnight but don't recall any particular after effects. I was in work and comfortable the next day. Guest guest
Tony - I would describe a needle biopsy as being uncomfortable rather than very painful. There is some pain, but I've had dentist procedures that were worse. Your urologist will probably take about 12 core samples and each time you will feel some pressure followed by a "snapping" noise and a stinging feeling. By the time you get to the last few samples you may feel a little nauseous, but that's really about it. I drove myself to the doctor's office and back home again. I had quite a bit of blood in my urine for 24 hours. Blood will also be present in the semen. Results are usually available in about 5 days. Hopefully your doctor will set up a follow-up appointment to have you come in and discuss your results. If so, take your spouse (if you have one) along with you. If the news is bad it will be nice to have a loved one along for support. If the news is good the two of you can go out to dinner and celebrate. Good luck and keep in touch. Guest guest
Just make sure you ask for as much as and whatever pain medication they offer and that they give it enough time to take effect. My husband had a biopsy in January and it was extremely painful. The urologist told him it would be a piece of cake - he is still angry at him for telling him that. When he asked the doctor at UCLA who did his surgery if biopsies are always that painful, he told him that at UCLA they give a nerve block and the patient doesn't feel anything. It think it depends on who does the biopsy. > > > My husband said the biopsy was Extremely Painful, > > way more than he ever > > thought it would've been, and passed blood in urine > > for a few days, but > > blood was in his semen for several weeks. > > Joani Walton > > Re: Biopsy > > Questions > > > > > > > Tony > > > > > > I wouldn't call it painful but there is a sort of > > cumulative discomfort as > > more > > > samples are taken. Guest guest
Tony If your doc thinks its a good thing to do go and get it done. I had a 12 needle biopsy. Yes it was uncomfortable but bearable. He deadened as much as he could before starting. I didnt notice the bleeding becausing I was already bleeding from the cancer. The best I can describe mine is like a very very slight tap in the nads just minor nausia and it went away as soon as the procedure was complete Im sure your like Superman and his were made of steel. dont worry just do it. Hey it was much better that the cystoscope I had.Tony Dentino wrote: oh man i dont even wanna go after reading all this--- lkirkpatrick1 wrote:> Just make sure you ask for as much as and whatever> pain medication > they offer and that they give it enough time to take> effect. Guest guest
My husband had the biopsy and said it did not hurt at all. No blood after. He said the worst part was the noise from the instrument. He had no tenderness, no discomfort and no problems. Guess it all depends on the skill of the doctor. Guest guest
Speaking from my experience in West Yorkshire, UK I can tell you it wasn't painful - they gave me some internal shots to ensure that didn't happen and even they were bearable - and I drove home 30 miniutes later. I could have gone back to work quite easily. Some blood appeared in my urine for several days as well as in the seminal fluid for a couple of weeks. The results took three weeks but as I wasn't expecting it to be cancer I didn't really think too much about it. The impact of the biopsy needles was evident internally at the time but I was talking quite comfortably with the people conducting the test while all that was going on. The procedure isn't anything to get worked up about although I can vouch for the fact that the results can be a bit of a shock. At least you have the support of this group and the knowledge that most things that will come out of the biopsy will be known about by many of the people in this group. Best of luck Huxley Biopsy Questions I am having it done on June 7th. I didnt ask doctor much because I was messed up by the news. Is it painful? Will I miss work for than a day. Guest guest
Tony - The biopsy is generally an "uncomfortable" procedure, but not necessarily painful, although some guys do find it so. I had a dozen core biopsies taken before my NSRRP back in early 2002 and drove to and from the procedure during my lunch hour, returning to work that day - if you are not emotionally beat, you can probably work some, but should avoid lifting and straining initially. I found the loud noise (when the needles spring into the gland for the biopsy) disconcerting, wondering if a truck had hit the building! Also there can be (and was for me) a temporary feeling of slight nausea and light-headedness with each firing of the biopsy probe. The uro sticks this probe up your butt (not many guys' favorite kind of activity!), visualizing your prostate with ultrasound - this is painless except for the sensation of having a soccer ball in your rectum! He then injects some local anesthesia, just like your dentist does. None of this is pleasant but it was less uncomfortable than I anticipated, and I am NOT a martyr (some guys don't blink at being catheterized, or doing regular self-catheterization, but me - I can run a 3 1/2 minute mile if I see someone with a catheter heading my way! Many uros will now do the procedure with "IV conscious sedation," which is an intravenous infusion you receive during the procedure, and wake up immediately after - it's a humane consideration, so ask if you are scared. They will ask that you have someone drive you home after IV conscious sedation. You may (or may not) have blood in your urine after the procedure - I personally had none except for a single pinkish urine the third morning after having it done. You can also potentially get a little blood in your stools for a day or so - this is rare, at least in my patients. Be sure and stop any aspirin products for about 10 days prior to having your biopsy. I didn't really check my first few ejaculations after biopsy, but did note that my semen appeared somewhat darkish (as opposed to white) for a few weeks afterwards - no frank blood and no discomfort with voiding or cumming (but I have heard of those being possible transient "adverse effects" of the procedure). Your uro will also give you an antibiotic to take prophylactically for a couple of days. Hope the above is helpful, and that your biopsy reveals nothing of much concern. - jdnmd>> I am having it done on June 7th. I didnt ask doctor much because I was > messed up by the news. Guest guest
My doc used topical lidocaine on my bowel and injected a local into the prostate. Thus no pain at all, though I did not like the sound of the spring discharging. He took 12 samples, six on each side. Had a bit of blood in the urine for a week and blood in the semen for close to a month. --BUT NO PAIN OR DISCOMFORT. From all the replies, it sounds to me like you need to take charge and tell your doc how you want it done. No point in being a victim of chance.
