Welcome, W! Sorry to hear that you aren't feeling good. I hope your

new rheumatologist will be able to help you.

The HLA-B27 test checks for the presence of a certain antigen on your white

blood cells - the human leukoctye antigen B27. HLA-B27 is associated with

the spondyloarthropathies (ankylosing spondylitis, Reiter's, and psoriatic

arthritis, for example), but a positive result can be found in 5 - 10% of

people with no signs or symptoms of autoimmune disease. Too, people who are

negative for HLA-B27 can have autoimmune diseases.

In short, it can be a helpful clue, but, on it's own, it can't be used to

make or break a diagnosis.
