Guest guest
Dr. JM, 10yo son has also tested very high on the ASO (390) and DNase-B Antibody (>1360) tests. His pediatrician has prescribed 500mg/ day of amoxicillin. Is amoxicillin as effective as zithromax? Also, he has had a problem with recurring cold sores for years. Is this possibly related to the high Strep titers? Should we run any specific tests for herpes, and would this type of infection cause behavioral issues? Or is this more an indication of a low-functioning immune system? He doesn't get sick any more often than other kids though (he does take a lot of vitamins). Thank you for your advice. > You must realize this treatment is more an art and not a science > yet, and every doctor has different ways with some believing it > should not even be treated, so I cannot answer most of your > questions - you need a good pediatrician to address this. Guest guest
Cold sores are probably more related to herpes viral titers, and can also be an indiciary of a troubled immune system. I would certainly run the comprehensive viral titer #3 at ISL and treat with Valtrex if titers are elevated. Viruses can definitely cause behavioral issues, not usually as dramatically as strep, but definitely many kids with high viruses do very well on anti-viral treatment. As to the antibiotic, there is no consen' sus; all doctors have varying ideas. If there are gut issues, I prefer injections of Bicillin.
