Yes, indeed ... but, hey, I already had cut the following from the UC at Irvine web site so I might as well paste it here anyway " " Other signs may help in aiding the physical diagnosis. These are very suggestive of cervical disc herniation when present, but are frequently absent in the presence of the disease (that is, they are specific but not sensitive). Spurling's sign refers to the reproduction or exacerbation of pain upon pushing down on the head and bending it toward the involved side. The reduction of pain when axial traction is applied to the head is also suggestive of a disc. Finally, in the shoulder abduction test raising the affected arm above the head reduces the pain. Guest guest
Hi Walt. I just read up on Alonzo's condition. The articles did not specify if he has global or segmental glomerulosclerosis. My wife and I are sitting here and sort of curiosly shocked. We got married on 08/97 and went on our honeymoon to a exclusive resort in the carribean called "cap jaluca". While we were there Alonzo Mourning got married to his wife at the same resort. We saw Alonzo and Ewing (Alonzo's best man) along with their families at the resort several times. I wonder if it is possible that we ate something or drank something that could have caused this illness b/c it seems to be a big coincidence.Vik
Guest guest
That's kind of scary, and somewhat of a coincidence. But I doubt that it would be caused environmentally with such a short exposure. I'll take a look at the article again and check the exact name. I thought they said it was focal... It's the same thing that the guy from the San Spurs had -- except that he already had a transplant. By the way, Ewing has already offered his kidney to Alonzo. Guest guest
Hi Smoked since age 13 (now 39). Gave up once diagnosis was known. My Neph said smoking was not the cause of IGAN, but would I please pack it in, for obvious reasons. One of the hardest things I have had to do, but feel great now. Let's face it, most things are said to be bad for us, but smoking has to be the biggest of all don't you think. Have never read anyway about smoking and kidney disease, but would be interested to read anything anyone else may have seen. Good luck with your experiments by the way, glad you didn't think I was being a scare mongerer!!! Best wishes (unknown) My neph says that smoking can be directly linked to kidney disease. any other ex-smokres out there? _________________________________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free E-mail from MSN Hotmail at http://www.hotmail.com. Guest guest
but I think that not knowing is worse There, I'll agree with you. I find myself constantly in the position of knowing more than anyone else in the environment precisely because I took the time and care to educate myself. Guest guest
I think it's better to read about it. Guest guest
I think education good too. Sure it might wig you out (love that expression) but I think that not knowing is worse. Also when it comes to a treatment plan, you want to be up on how others are getting on with their medications to help you make your decsions, and what other options you might have that your medical team might not know about yet. _________________________________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free E-mail from MSN Hotmail at http://www.hotmail.com. Guest guest
Absolutely spot on . Knowledge is power in my book. Power to regain some control and say in your medical treatment and power to be able to challenge information you may not be happy with. Sorry guys, but I hate the expression 'wig you out'. All I can picture is false hair pieces LOL!!!!! Best wishes RE: (unknown) I think education good too. Sure it might wig you out (love that expression) but I think that not knowing is worse. Guest guest
, I do have to admit that there are times that I read what is happening to some of you in more advanced stages I get a little freaked out. But then again that's good, since for a while I didn't take my fish oil or anything because I didn't feel like it. I am a little nervous about seeing my neph tomorrow since my protein for 24hrs is doulbe what it was last time. But, I did my twenty four hour when I was comming down with whatever I have now (sore throat) that I'm on antibiotics. Did you ever hear if having a sore throat or something will throw off your tests? -Byron > RE: (unknown) > > > I think education good too. Guest guest
Byron Most definitely if you are suffering a virus of some sort, your readings may well be off-course tomorrow. A favourite with me is higher blood in urine and elevated BP, and a touch of protein loss. You should make your Neph aware you are suffering, and also that you are on antibiotics, again this can interfere with bloodwork tests. My Neph stressed to me that in times of infections IGA is likely to be more active. Don't worry too much ok, your doing exactly the right thing, by taking antibiotics for a sore throat. Good luck tomorrow. Best wishes RE: (unknown) > > > I think education good too. Sure it might wig you out (love that > expression) but I think that not knowing is worse. Guest guest
Thanks for your reply. I ended up calling the Dr late last night and he reassured me that the bright red blood can happen on and off. It seems the flu is to blame and my son is doing much better today...Thank God! The way the Dr talks is that his urine, for the rest of his life, will be discolored, a tea color. Is that right? Some of you that have had this (IGA) for years is your urine dicolored all the time? Guest guest
Hi . If there is any change from his prior condition that the doctor doesn't know about, especially with a child, I would call the doctor -- more so since the bloody urine appears to coincide with a fever. Bright red urine is less common than the tea or cola coloured one, but it's not necessarily a danger signal. Still, to be on the safe side, I would at the very least give his doctor a call. Guest guest
With IGA is your urine output alot less than usually? It depends. Most of us have a definite variation, although I've noticed that most of us on this list tend to have higher output at night after we go to bed. The only reason I do is because I take a diuretic before I go to bed, last thing at night with some of my transplant drugs. Guest guest
It really should affect urine output until a person has more advanced kidney failure, unless a person gets into an acute glomerulonephritis. It can get complicated, because some people (children especially) start out with an acute gn, and others just gradually develop chronic gn. But you can have an acute gn develop on top of the chronic one. This disease is so variable that you sort of have to keep on eye on things so that if anything different develops, you can give the doctor a call. Hope your son's fever and red urine is better.
