It might be a good idea. My endo has his own type of stress test that has

three tests. you have electrodes on your body hooked up to a little

computer. One test is where you stand up and sit down continuously for a

period of time. for oneyou have to blow into a straw and keep a certain

amount of pressure and take breaths when you need to. I don't remember what

the third test is. He usually has me take this test every five years or so.

both times he said the results didn't look right to him so he sent me to a

cardiologist. When I went the first time I only had insurance that would pay

for hospitalization so he ran the treadmill test in his office. this was

before I lost my sight. The other time he just had me wear a monitor for 24

hours to check my heart. The first time he wanted to do the thalium stress

test where they put the thalium in your blood to stress your heart but you

still have to run the treadmill. It just doesn't take as long.

The problem I had was getting to see the cardiologist. Whenever I had an

appointment he seemed to be out on an emergency so I had to get someone to

bring me back again. The last time I went the nurse ran the ECG and we

waited and waited. AFter a while we had to leave and the nurse said the EKG

looked OK to him so we left and they never called us back. It is about time

for my endo to do his stress test again so he can send me to the

cardiologist. It seems like a racket but you never know that there might be

a problem.

Interesting Dean. Thanks for shareing. Has anyone else had a heart stress

test done? What was your test like? What did you have to do?

I think an annual heart stress test would mostly be a racket or a money

maker for the physicians. If a person is not in physical shape and does not

show symptoms like shortness of breath and other symptoms, then it should

not be done.

Interesting view. What are some of the symptoms of possible heart attack or

stroke? Diabetics typically do not feel them because of neuropathy.

, I have had both types of stress tests-on the tred mill and with the

injection. No, I don't think it is necessary for every diabetic to have

this test yearly. Even if you have had a heart attack, they will not do it

yearly. There are some risks to this test. Usually it is done only by a

cardiologist and is donw only in a hospital or specially equipped office.

It takes a good hour or so to do with the shot and longer with the tred

mill. It is very expensive. It is donw only if cardiac problems are

suspected or are known. There are a number of factors that doctors look at

before determinig this test needs to be done such as degree and lenght of

time you have been ypertensive, what your total colestrol etc. looks like

and any other cardiac sysmptoms.

At some time in the future, I'm sure there will be a t est that will not

involve so much that will be accurate as to the amount of heart disease one

has, but it hasn't been invented yet!

heart stress test

Hi.

As a type 1 or type 2 diabetic, it is important to know that or what this

disease can effect. We all know eyes. But it also can effect kidneys, legs,

feet, and more importantly, our life line, the heart. This brings me to my

next question. Do you feel its important to have a yearly stress test on

your heart to determine if diabetes is beginning to destroy your heart?

They now have a shot of a drug that speeds up the heart and they monitor it

for a set time frame and once the shot wears off, they can do statistical

analysis on the numbers your heart showed/that they recorded. You no longer

have to walk/run on a treadmill until you about die. However, that type of

test is also available by most doctors.

So, what do you feel about this idea of an annual stress test? If you have

had a stress test in the past, what did you think of it? Can you share your

experience with us? Looking for thoughts and opinions on this from list

The first stress test I had done was on a tred mill despite the blindness.

They first gave me an IV of some drug, waited for half an hour and then

hooked me up with electrodes. I then laid in a huge machine, which circled

around my chest and x-rayed the circulatin of my heart. then I got up and

had to do the tred mill-hooked up to the electrodes still. then after

waiting until my heart rate slowed down to normal, had to lay on the machine

again for a shorter mperiod of time. This total test took almost 3 hours!

the second one I had about 5 years later, was the IV test and they again

hooked up to elecrodes and a smaller machine rotated around me as my heart r

ate incrased due to the IV. It took about 45 mintes. Both of these

particular tests not only look at your heart and vessels, but also on how

well your blood flows through the vascular system of the heart. The first one

of those was don about 6 years after by quadruple by-pass and the second one

5 years later. As I had been stricly watching my diet after the by-pass,

they were essentially the same. The doc is real pleased as most diabetic

people have to have a repeat by-pass after 7 or 8 years. It has now been

over 13 since I had it and do not need another.

but Eskimos also have a high diabetic rate. I have some problem with this

belief as I have kept a low fat diet for longer than a low carb diet and

thus have not needed another by-pass. but, the low fat I do is especially

low animal fat as opposed to canola or olive oil.

Re: heart stress test

Research is coming to show that it is not the fat you consume that causes

the problems with fat in the arteries, but it is actually more closely

related to the number of carbohydrates you consume. The higher your

carbohydrate consumption, the greater you are likely to have

atherosclerosis, arteriosclerosis, high blood pressure and a lot of other

vascular diseases including heart trouble. The Eskimoes, who traditionally

consume very low amounts of carbohydrates, but have diets consisting

primarily of protein and fat, have very few heart attacks as compared to

people living in the lower states.

one point Harry brought up Pat that is really good is we can use our lab

results to tailor our diets so we don't need heart surgery and so on. 15

years ago, we didn't have access to records like we do today which helps us

take better care of our bodies by using the information to help us

personally adjust our eating as required.

For example, in about 1 week I'll be getting my blood test results back. If

my LDL cholesterol is up, I'll back off fat in my diet. Last LDL was 79

which is great. If my trigliserites are up, I'll back off carbs in my diet

and eat less of them etc.

Folks gotta get educated on the types of blood work tests they can have done

to help them better their lives.

You're right, . a great deal of the problem is that docs don't

educatee and people don't know enough to ask what numbers mean-if the doc

even tells yu the numbers. I can't tell yu how many people tell me " My

doctor said my cholesterol is up and so is something else, but i don't know

what he meant. "
