Valtrex is an extremely safe drug, and hundreds of kids have been given it

without problems. Very rarely, there may be liver stress (although I have

never seen it) but I advise getting a Comprehensive Metabolic Panel before

giving it and making sure the liver enzymes are in a good place, and then

once 4-6 weeks after starting it just to make sure there is no problem. If

there is, it will show up right away. I think a three-month trial is pretty

much the minimal time to see if it is effective, and the standard dose is

500mg 2-3 times a day. Dr. JM

Carie,

Have you some good (or excellent) fotos of the " warts " ? Having such

photos will be helpful over time. Words never convey what a wart or rash

looks like. If you could share the fotos - either via this list's files

section or via direct email to some of us - then we could be researching

what the " warts " might be. What other lab data or med history suggest

" viral " ?

I do not have photos, but can take some. One of the warts on his face is

the worst one it is above his upper lip, and below his nose, and it consists

of many on top of each other. I do not know that they are viral, I just

assumed. I will try to send photos. Thanks.

Carie,

The CSB-autism-rx list is set to edit out attachments, images, etc, so

you'll have to post the images into the files section or send them to

interested folks (eg, JMmd, me, other?) offlist. If the photos are in

the files section for a while, then more opinions can be obtained.

Another listmate or several may have seen exactly the same type of " warts " .

I am sending the pictures tonight. I do not know how to put things in the

files; can you let me know how I can send them directly to you and Dr.

McCandless? Thanks.

My son was a huge valtrex responder, HUGE! Like night and day.

He is on 1000mg a day, 500mg morning and night. He has been on this dose for

almost 2 years now with no known side effects.

He is now 6 years old and weighs around 57 lbs.

My pediatrician is very leery about putting my son on Valtrex! He is a huge

viral kid, and has probably over 50 or more warts all over his body (hands

bottom, face, mouth, and even lips). He is willing to prescribe Valtrex,

but wanted to know from another doctor if this is safe, and is recommended

for kids or not. My Dr. has looked all over, and can not find any

information on Valtrex. Can you help give me some information on this, or

tell me where I can get it? Thanks.

Hi...just click on PHOTOS on left hand side of screen.

It will have directions to ADD A PHOTO.. click there and it lets you

browse your computer and add the photo file... it is easy and has

directions on the page too I believe. I did this all the time when I

was adopting and sharing photos on adoption lists. :)

It also will be good idea since photos sometimes fill up email boxes

if you can post it. People can also download them if they need to

from the photo section,

Best of luck!

Part of all my children's initial evaluations include the Premier Autism

Panel from Immunosciences Labs - this includes the Comprehensive Viral Panel

#3, which tests all the herpes family of viruses. If antibody titers are

elevated particularly in the IgM or IgA categories, this is evidence of

active viral infections. This is particularly corroborated by positive

brain auto-antibodies such as Myelin Basic Protein, and when these are both

positive, a sure indication to me that a trial of Valtrex is indicated; at

least a 3 month trial is necessary to truly get benefits, as all these

outpatient anti-virals are virostatic, not virocidal, meaning they do not

eradicate the viruses, but keep them from replicating while the body gets

into better shape from all the other healing strategies we are doing to be

able to handle the usual viruses that we all deal with. Those with lowered

immunity cannot deal with them well, and they build up accumulations in the

brain that show up in SPECT scans as areas of hypoperfusion (not good). Dr.

My son's viral titters were not as high as some, EBV 465 ref of <100.

Herpes viruses were not high.

Chicken pox virus was somewhat elevated.

I have seen some parents post titters in the 1500 range.

But still, my son showed vast, overnight improvements from Valtrex. And you

also have to remember, we do not know everything there is to know about viruses.

We test for the ones we can. There are probably many that we don't know about.

I think it is worth a trial.

What do you look for to see if your child needs valtrex, and what

are the responses if it helps?
