We endure such pain and all of the horrible symptoms, we become scared, and to make it worse cannot get in touch with our doctors!! Does anyone on this site have a doctor that cares -- really cares! I know exactly what is going through with the docs. These liver docs are a species of their own. I always thought orthopods were arrogant, but the liver docs I know are much, much worse then them. (One of my best friends is an orthopod and I love him dearly, but he is arrogant)! I really can't give you advice on how to handle this, but if I lived near my doc I would " set-up house " on his door steps!! How dare they do this to us -- it is not like we aren't serious about this disease or are making things up about the symptoms. It sounds like you need help immediately! Losing all the weight and with all the horrible symptoms, you need some kind of medical person to see you. I know what you mean about the ER because they know nothing whatsoever about this disease. I do have a special relationship with two of the ER docs, so when I have to be taken there they have on my chart not to do x-rays or any other tests other than blood. All they do is give me a pain shot -- not morphine or anything like that, just one to ease this pain. By the way, I have only been to the ER 4 times in 3 years! , do you have anyone at home with you? If not, can't you call any of your friends to come a stay with you tonight and tomorrow or until that horrible doc will see you? You need some with you that you can trust and feel safe with. Guest guest Posted August 6, 1999 Report Share Posted August 6, 1999 , I know that you have been rising above your symptoms because of your dear mother's death and all the responsibilities you have shouldered. Your former doc seems like an insensitive jerk, but that doesn't mean he should shrug you off. you are feeling seriously worried about 1) your continued weight loss, and 2) the sudden diarhea, a new development. The doc should be honest with you and admit that he has no idea what should be done with out some testing and in any case it might just be to give you an IV to rehydrate you if you've become dehydrated. Your weight loss is a concern but probably not life threatening. The diarhea if it continues can cause serious chemical imballances, usually not life threatening in an adult but very serious in a child. I'd either give the doc a call back (if you feel up to dealing with him, which I probably wouldn't) or go to the ER if I had continuing diarhea, nausea so I could hardly eat anything and fever 3 degrees above normal. Even if they don't know about your disease they will have to take your vitals and they will check for dehydration. Be sure to tell them that you are passing bile in your stool. Phil's got all the doctors in the GI department at the hospital familiar with his case so they have told him to go to the hospital and have them call them. I don't know what to tell you dear, you've been through so much. The rapid weight loss in someone as small as you (that is a tremendous weight loss for your size in such a short period of time) is a major symptom. I can't believe they wouldn't treat you and, as Tim said at least give you iv fluids. I wish you were here and had Phil's doctors, they are so good. We will pray real hard for you tonight and if you want my vote, you'll go to ER. Stop trying to protect your family ask them to help you. It might do good for them to help you for a change. Guest guest Posted August 6, 1999 Report Share Posted August 6, 1999 Biddy, Phil has a bunch of doctors that are caustious about ERCP's and surgery but very aggressive about testing, treating and hospitalizing Phil as soon as he needs it. And I truly know that all of them from the internists to surgeons to GI docs to liver doc really do care about him. We thank God everyday that we are where we are and have the doctors we have. I went to Phil's primary internist personnally on Wed and had a disagreement about hormone replacement therapy (I believe in doing it naturally with natural progestrone cream not syntetic hormones) he didn't seem familiar with my (Dr. Lee's) natural treatment. I took him a whole bunch of stuff I printed off the internet about it tonight when I had to got to him for a shot of cortisone in my foot. He was very pleased to get it and asked if it was his to keep. I'll be interested if he reads it and researches it. That will show me that he really cares about his women, and even me patients. Guest guest Posted August 8, 1999 Report Share Posted August 8, 1999 Hi Biddy, Phil and I just returned from a square dance this afternoon. Phil held up fine, we don't dance all the tips. It was very crowded because it was a fun raiser for one of the callers that accidentally shot himself with a gun that was in his van. He is a full time caller and the only one bringing in an income. They raised $6,000. They have had several benefit dances for him all over Southern California. Luckily, Phil still is able to square dance because it's a fun way to exercise and we have met so many friends that way. We live about 50 miles north of Los Angeles, Calif., and have Kaiser Insurance which is a very large self contained HMO. The place where Phil will get transplanted, when that time comes, is UCLA Hospital. The doctors in both facilities are very good, very compasionate, and most of them have a good sense of humor. Well thank God everyday for them. I feel very sad for those of you that don't have as compasionate and knowledgeable doctors with this disease. When I am not feeling well, the least that my doctors will do is the basic blood tests--then we go from there. I also think that it is worth mentioning to your new doctor that the other doctor didn't seem to react appropriately to your call. One thing my GI did for me was to give me the lab paperwork necessary for a complete work up. I keep it at home and have been told to use it if I start running a fever over 101 and can't reach anyone right away. He knows that I know when I'm in trouble and won't abuse the situation. I'm sure most of you are very aware of the times when bloodwork is necessary too. If we could just get ALL of our doctors to trust our instincts.......... It just is so hard for me to believe of all of the killing taking place in our country. Why? Why would anyone do this? I think if the killers had a disease like we have it might give them so perspective on life -- but I doubt that. When we are so desperately clinging for some hope of life, these crazies are out there taking precious lives -- and today preschool children. This was such a horrible today -- in fact, the last 3 weeks have been horrible. Today, however, I had to take 4 -- count them -- 4 Percosets! That is the most I have had to have so far. My pain is getting so much worse that I don't know what to do. It has gotten to the point that I pray that I will die quietly in my sleep. I know that is the easy way and selfish way out, but enough is enough -- 3 years of this horrible pain!! Oh well, don't know why I said that because everyone here has enough problems of their own. Some pain meds are addictive, therefore they make the brain think that you are in pain. I'm not saying that this is what is happening in your case, but you may want to check it out. I have felt the same feelings before of just wanting to be free and thinking that maybe death was the easiest way to freedom. I wish I could take some of your pain away from you and help you to feel better. I hate watching people go through pain. I will be with you in spirit and I am praying for you and everyone else. Not sure if this is an appropriate poem...I read it almost everyday now and thought I would share it with you. I very often wonder why those kinds of people are healthy (in the body) and sweet loving people like Phil are sick. They will pay in the end which is a much much longer time than we have here on earth. I'm so sorry about your terrible pain. I asked Phil's doctor about him taking Percoset and he said no way yet, it's too strong a narcotic. When you get a transplant you can take up square dancing. Think of that and I hope they can help you soon. Actually, I can't remember where I read it, and I don't want to scare you, but I have read that smoking can increase your risk for cancer of the bile ducts. I'm trying to cut down on my smoking to eventually quit. I'm not saying that you should, it's just what I'm deciding to do for myself. I have always done yoga -- my husband's uncle was Egyptian and he did hypnosis and a lot of things for the mind. He was a great man -- he did extensive research at Duke University for many years about parapsychology -- I would sit and listen to him for hours and hours. He taught me about yoga which was a wonderful thing in my life at that time. All of docs say to me when I get so scared of being addictive -- " Why are you worried about it? " " It is better to become addictive than to suffer like you do. " They even said I could still smoke if it made me feel better -- " What is going to get you first -- the liver or cancer from cigarettes. I have never seen a test on a liver or just knowing about people's livers that cigarettes hurt the liver in any way shape or form. Just keep smoking because you are not going to die from lung cancer or any kind of cancer from cigarettes! I want to thank you for ALLLLLLL of your help since I have been on this site. I am supposed to have a high-threshold of pain, but I am wondering about that now. I did, however, finally clean my house today and didn't take a Percoset! For the last 2 weeks I have barely been able to get up and out of bed -- but I REFUSE TO STAY IN BED!!!! I am trying something that is a little scary to me. I am going to see my son who is a doctor in Dayton, Ohio, Friday. Last time I was supposed to go I got up with this searing pain in the stomach area and just couldn't go. I am going to try it again!! Phil is so very lucky to have a wonderful wife like you. I know it has to be h--- for you, just watching your husband slowly deterioating with this " devil " disease. My heart goes out to both of you. With your will and Phil's will you both will make it through this together and probably more in love -- is that possible? The recent shooting and the horrendous tornado in Salt Lake City has me thanking God that at least I sort of know if I die, I WILL BE with God. A tornado has not been seen in that area since the 60's and it just drops out of the sky on all of these dear people not expecting it! Bless their hearts! Oh how good I have it. I live in W.VA. and we have hardly any tornadoes and if we do they are very small. These lush mountains protect us from a lot of horrible things. He's planting bushes around our patio. That's the last we have to do to make our place perfect. We love our place so much. It's small but just the way we want it and we'll probably be in it a lot as Phil gets sicker. He and I have only been married about 2 1/2 years. But, yes, our love still is growing. I don't know if you got my e-mail or not, but I will be in Dayton about 6 p.m. tomorrow evening and will be staying until sometime Monday. Please say a big prayer for me as this is the first long trip I have made since the pain has gotten so much worse! I will be at E-Mail: JacEmail@... if you would like to get together for lunch or dinner and we will be able to talk with my son, Dr. Todd , his wife, Jacinda; my husband, and of course numbero uno (LOL) me! Oh I just can't wait to be with you -- I am really excited to go now and if I have to I will take Percosets all the way up!! Hope I don't have to.
