Guest guest
On that page I sent there were links to pages against Splenda. this is the first I had heard of anyone saying anything bad about it. I guess there are people who can not tolerate some of these but I believe they are safe for most people. That is like the report I heard some years ago about how bad microwave cooking is for you. Guest guest
Wayne, The information about diet soft drinks containing nutrasweet turning into formaldehyde at high temperatures is bogus information. News Recommended Products Print this Page Why Nutrasweet was so Successful and Will Likely Never be Replaced by Splenda By Dr. Janet Starr Hull I receive many e-mails asking what I think about the newest artificial sweetener, Splenda®. My first thought is the obvious answer: any artificial sweetener is harmful to the health of humans and all animals. But it also became obvious to me the more I was asked this question, that NO new chemical sweetener will ever take the market like NutraSweet/Equal® did. While pondering the emergence of the many 'new' sugar substitutes of late, it came clear exactly WHY NutraSweet has been such a social icon for the past 20 years. NutraSweet has remained popular not due to its quality of product (or lack of quality, as the case may be), but because The NutraSweet Company designed one of the most brilliantly strategized corporate campaigns in history. THEY masterminded their own market and THEY structured from the beginning a social monopoly more well-thought-out than any other American corporation to date. So will Splenda, Tagatose, maltitol or even natural Stevia ever replace NutraSweet's track record and past 20-year monopoly? Not likely. Without the manipulation of its competitors, liaisons within government agencies and the soft drink industry, the AMA (American Medical Association) and the media, no other artificial sweetener will hold a candle to the history of aspartame. Here's the deal . The NutraSweet Company became a trillion dollar industry because seven shrewd corporate and government leaders got away with executing marketing strategies that enabled them to covertly pocket the 'diet' market. The history of aspartame and the NutraSweet Company stratagem will one day be written about in business journals and marketing textbooks taught at universities. What will they say? That the NutraSweet Company carefully planned out and successfully achieved the following: a.. All their competition was carefully eliminated and taken off the market. Note: Saccharin was not totally removed from the market due to Monsanto Chemical Company owning BOTH saccharin and NutraSweet, and also due to saccharin's true 'safety' record. (See newsletter archives on Monsanto and saccharin for more information.) b.. Marketing strategies were set into motion to gain access to and influence relationships with the food and pharmaceutical industries. c.. Liaisons were established between the NutraSweet Company and government officials, specifically the FDA and U.S. Department of Transportation. d.. Relationships were bridged between the NutraSweet Company and the AMA, the American Diabetic Association, the Multiple Sclerosis Society, among other public health organizations. e.. New research centers were funded and built by the NutraSweet Company at predominant universities throughout the United States. f.. Research scientists responsible for aspartame safety testing were payrolled by the NutraSweet Company. g.. Marketing relationships were established between the NutraSweet Company and the National Soft Drink Association and the various soft drink companies. h.. Allegiances were established within American mainstream media primarily through multi-million dollar advertising campaigns to television stations and prominent newspapers. (Hull, Janet, SWEET POISON: How The World's Most Popular Artificial Sweetener Is Killing Us, New Horizon Press, 1999.) The seven businessmen and government officials responsible for the creation of the NutraSweet Company and its historic cornering of the market prepared and executed these brilliant business strategies. Some day the facts will be common knowledge. My hat's off to the NutraSweet Company for such a zealously designed and brilliantly controlled marketing campaign. It succeeded longer than anyone expected, even the NutraSweet Company officials themselves. So will Splenda or any other artificial sweetener be able to repeat the NutraSweet Company's historic control of the world sweetener market? Not likely without manipulation of its competitors, liaisons with government agencies, the soft drink industry, the AMA and the media. And as far as product quality goes? Oh yeah--that's what this is supposed to be all about, isn't it? -------------------------------------------------------------- Dr. Mercola's Comment: Aspartame is the artificial sweetener used in such brands as Equal and Nutrasweet. Guest guest
It seems that no matter what new product comes out, someone has a problem wit it. It's just like medication. Guest guest
it is a chemical, and research has shown that it's chemical makeup changes based off temperature so he is not entirely inaccurate. Long term use of nutra sweet has been linked to many neurological disorders. Just do a google on it and read up on it. Researchers state that Nutra sweet was designed to be used/drank occasionally, like 1 pop a day, and Americans abuse it heavily. Most drink 3 to 5 pops a day and they are huge portions. Ever got a large diet coke from Mcs? BTW I am not anti nutra sweet, I use it myself. Guest guest
I did not find any thing on quackwatch about nutrasweet, so I will have to check it out in the hoax files web site. Wayne, just because a company sponsors the development of a product doesn't mean it is flawed. I would agree that a certain amount of bias or prejudice is built into the research, but it still does not mean that the product is flawed. Since practically all the medications we take were developed by a sponsoring company, and I am sure most of the final products have some research bias included in the reports on the product, but still this does not mean the product itself is flawed. Still searching for answers, Harry Emailing: nutrasweet.htm > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > Why Nutrasweet was so Successful and Will Likely Never be > Replaced > > by > > > > > Splenda 2/11/04I am sending this just for information for you to > > mull > > > > > over. > > > > > > > > > > Dean > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > Dr. ph Mercola > > > > > Author of > > > > > The No-Grain Diet > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > Enter your e-mail address below to > > > > subscribe > > > > > to my free newsletter: > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > Previous Newsletters > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > Essential Info > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > H.O.T. Tell me where you read about the Monsanto company and nutrasweet causing formaldehyde at high temperatures. Now I am off to a google search for monsanto and nutrasweet. Guest guest
Wayne, I checked with google and I have found several thousands of references. Here is a sample below: Return To Aspartame ( Nutrasweet ) Toxicity Information Center Main Page (case histories of aspartame poisoning, scientific docs, statements from experts, healthier sweeteners) In 1997 there was an increase in aspartame users reporting severe toxicity reactions and damage such as seizures, eye damage and vision loss, confusion, severe migraines, tremors, depression, anxiety attacks, insomnia, etc. In the same years, Ralph Walton, MD, Chairman, The Center for Behavioral Medicine showed that the only studies which didn't find problems with aspartame where those funded by the manufacturer (Monsanto). Given the agreement amongst independent scientists about the toxicity of aspartame, the only question was whether the formaldehyde exposure from aspartame caused the toxicity. That question has now been largely answered because of research in the late 1990s. The following facts shown by recent scientific research: List of 6 items 1. Aspartame (nutrasweet) breaks down into methanol (wood alcohol). 2. Methanol quickly converts to formadehyde in the body. 3. Formaldehyde causes gradual and eventually severe damage to the neurological system, immune system and causes permanent genetic damage at extremely low doses. 4. Methanol from alcoholic beverages and from fruit and juices does not convert to formaldehyde and cause damage because there are protective chemicals in these traditionally ingested beverages. 5. The most recent independent research in Europe demonstrates that ingestion of small amounts of aspartame leads to the accumulation of significant levels of formaldehyde (bound to protein) in organs (liver, kidneys, brain) and tissues. 6. Excitotoxic amino acids such as the one which is immediately released from aspartame likely increases the damage caused by the formaldehyde. list end Readers are urged to followup by printing and reading the extensive and heavily-referenced discussion related to aspartame and methanol/formaldehyde poisoning (suitable for scientists and laypersons) at: http://www.holisticmed.com/aspartame/abuse/. This document details the research showing formaldehyde toxicity from aspartame and demonstrates the techniques the manufacturer used to help hide these facts. Finally, an updated discussion of formaldehyde dosage from aspartame has been added to answer questions raised by what appears to be a manufacturer public relations campaign. Please read this document only after reading the first methanol/formaldehyde document linked to above. Keywords: nutrasweet Monsanto Harry note follows: I am still sifting through a lot of these references I have found via google. So far I observe that nutrasweet causes damage to some rats and some people when taken large doses. It has a cumulative damaging effect when consumed over a long span of time. Also it does not happen with certain substances present. I cannot help but think of alcoholics being treated with Antabuse, a pill designed to cause the alcoholic to become sick when he/she consumes alcohol and it usually works. However with some alcoholics they soon discovered that they could prevent the alcohol from being turned into formaldehyde by a combination of alcohol and antabuse by ingesting large quantities of vitamin C. I came to this observation when I read the following quoted from above. " 4. Methanol from alcoholic beverages and from fruit and juices does not convert to formaldehyde and cause damage because there are protective chemicals in these traditionally ingested beverages. " Well, I will keep on searching for now and I will keep on using Stevia as my sweetener. I am not yet convinced that nutrasweet is causing damage to me, but who knows. I am sure the lawyers love this one. Sign up for your share of the class action suit now, if you have drank any diet drinks at all with nutrasweet in it. Guest guest
Wayne, Here is what I found from the urban legends post: Urban Myth- Nutrasweet Aspartame Conspiracy Claim: The artificial sweetener aspartame is responsible for an epidemic of diseases such as multiple sclerosis and lupus. Status: False. Example: [Collected on the Internet, 1998] I have spent several days lecturing at the WORLD ENVIRONMENTAL CONFERENCE on " ASPARTAME marketed as 'NutraSweet', 'Equal', and 'Spoonful " '. In the keynote address by the EPA, they announced that there was an epidemic of multiple sclerosis and systemic lupus, and they did not understand what toxin was causing this to be rampant across the United States. I explained that I was there to lecture on exactly that subject. When the temperature of Aspartame exceeds 86 degrees F, the wood alcohol ASPARTAME coverts to formaldehyde and then to formic acid, which in turn causes metabolic acidosis. (Formic acid is the poison found in the sting of fire ants). The methanol toxicity mimics multiple sclerosis; thus people are being diagnosed with having multiple sclerosis in error. The multiple sclerosis is not a death sentence, where methanol toxicity is. In the case of systemic lupus, we are finding it has become almost as rampant as multiple sclerosis, especially Diet Coke and Diet Pepsi drinkers. Also, with methanol toxicity, the victims usually drink three to four 12 oz. cans of them per day, some even more. In the cases of systemic lupus, which is triggered by ASPARTAME, the victim usually does not know that the aspartame is the culprit. The victim continues its use aggravating the lupus to such a degree, that sometimes it becomes life threatening. When we get people off the aspartame, those with systemic lupus usually become asymptomatic. Unfortunately, we can not reverse this disease. On the other hand, in the case of those diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis, (when in reality, the disease is methanol toxicity), most of the symptoms disappear. We have seen cases where their vision has returned and even their hearing has returned. This also applies to cases of tinnitus. During a lecture I said " If you are using ASPARTAME (NutraSweet, Equal, Spoonful, etc.) and you suffer from fibromyalgia symptoms, spasms, shooting pains, numbness in your legs, cramps, vertigo, dizziness, headaches, tinnitus, joint pain, depression, anxiety attacks, slurred speech, blurred vision, or memory loss -- you probably have ASPARTAME DISEASE! " People were jumping up during the lecture saying, " I've got this, is it reversible? " It is rampant. Some of the speakers at my lecture even were suffering from these symptoms. In one lecture attended by the Ambassador of Uganda, he told us that their sugar industry is adding aspartame! He continued by saying that one of the industry leader's son could no longer walk - due in part by product usage! We have a very serious problem. Even a stranger came up to Dr. Espisto (one of my speakers) and myself and said, 'Could you tell me why so many people seem to be coming down with MS? During a visit to a hospice, a nurse said that six of her friends, who were heavy Diet Coke addicts, had all been diagnosed with MS. This is beyond coincidence. At the time of its first drug hearing, people were going blind. The methanol in the aspartame converts to formaldehyde in the retina of the eye. Formaldehyde is grouped in the same class of drugs as cyanide and arsenic DEADLY POISONS!!! Unfortunately, it just takes longer to quietly kill, but it is killing people and causing all kinds of neurological problems. Aspartame changes the brain's chemistry. It is the reason for severe seizures. This drug changes the dopamine level in the brain. Imagine what this drug does to patients suffering from Parkinson's Disease. This drug also causes Birth Defects. There is absolutely no reason to take this product. It is NOT A DIET PRODUCT!!! The Congressional record said, " It makes you crave carbohydrates and will make you FAT " . Dr. stated that when he got patients off aspartame, their average weight loss was 19 pounds per person. The formaldehyde stores in the fat cells, particularly in the hips and thighs. Aspartame is especially deadly for diabetics. All physicians know what wood alcohol will do to a diabetic. We find that physicians believe that they have patients with retinopathy, when in fact, it is caused by the aspartame. The aspartame keeps the blood sugar level out of control, causing many patients to go into a coma. Unfortunately, many have died. People were telling us at the Conference of the American College of Physicians, that they had relatives that switched from saccharin to an aspartame product and how that relative had eventually gone into a coma. Their physicians could not get the blood sugar levels under control. Thus, the patients suffered acute memory loss and eventually coma and death. We ask that you help too. Print this article out and warn everyone you know. Take anything that contains aspartame back to the store. Take the " NO ASPARTAME TEST " and send us your case history. Origins of this Urban Myth: Well, if you can't trust an anonymous e-mail message filled with words rendered in all CAPITAL LETTERS and containing liberal doses of exclamation points, warning you about some widespread and imminent danger, what can you trust? From whence comes this information? For one thing, it's not new -- this text was written by one Betty i back in 1995. And who is this Betty i? Well, she's not a doctor, biologist, chemist, or any other type of scientist -- she is the founder of Mission Possible International, an organization dedicated to " spreading the word that aspartame is a toxic poison unfit for human consumption. " Now, Ms. i may be earnest and sincere, but her screed is full of flawed logic, scientific errors, and outright misinformation. We're not going to attempt to go through it point by point, nor are we going to claim that aspartame is either a health hazard or absolutely 100% non-harmful in any amount. What we will assert is that there is simply nothing remotely approaching a consensus in the medical/scientific community that aspartame is (or even could be) responsible for an " epidemic of multiple sclerosis and systemic lupus " or many of the other evils attributed to it above. Guest guest
After reading the post below are you frightened away from diet drinks with nutrasweet in it? Did you believe the post? Just consider this quote: " Aspartame is especially deadly for diabetics. All physicians know what wood alcohol will do to a diabetic. A logical analysis of the statements shows that it is false at its core. Have you lost control over your blood sugars due to nutrasweet is a question you really need to ask yourself. For me the answer to this question is a resounding NO! Guest guest
I know several diabetics who have extremely high sugars from nutrasweet and can ot drink it. Their a1c levels are 4.5 to 5.2 and when they drank a diet pop with nutra sweet, their blood sugar went up the 330 to 350 range and hung there for 6 hours each pop they drank. It was just the way it chemically interacted with their body chemistry. Not mine though *smile* Regards, Re: Emailing: nutrasweet.htm > > > > Wayne, > > Here is what I found from the urban legends post: > > Urban Myth- Nutrasweet Aspartame Conspiracy > > Claim: The artificial sweetener aspartame is responsible for an epidemic > of > > diseases such as multiple sclerosis and lupus. > > Status: False. > > > > Example: [Collected on the Internet, 1998] > > > > I have spent several days lecturing at the WORLD ENVIRONMENTAL CONFERENCE > on > > " ASPARTAME marketed as 'NutraSweet', 'Equal', and 'Spoonful " '. Guest guest
I do not doubt that you do know several diabetics who have this particular reaction to nutrasweet. Still I would like for one of them to post their experience here. I remember when I thought I was drinking a diet Pepsi, and my sugar level shot up to over 300. I got upset, and tried to figure out why. On rummaging through the trash can and coming up with the can of diet Pepsi I thought I had drank, it turned out that it was a regular can of Pepsi with 40 or so carbs in it. I know there are people who have sensitivities to Nutrasweet, since I am well aquainted with my daughter who suffered with migraine headaches, and when she stopped using nutrasweet in any form her headaches went away, and they have never returned.
