I am having a blast this winter with the local adaptive ski program

see: http://coloradodiscoverability.com/index.cfm, check out Winter

So far I have just used the mono-ski on short runs but I am gaining

strength and endurance like never before.

Friday, we are going all the way to the top and I am going to go down on

a bi-ski.

Is anyone else enjoying this activity? I have pics if anyone is interested.

Sounds great.

I thought I had given up skiing but I might reconsider it if I can ever make it

to CO! Does most of the work go in your arms with the mono-ski?

I started PT again, working on legs/hips/back post-op. I can walk from A to B,

and I pace myself with prolonged activities, but still need to build up

endurance and strength. Arms aren't very strong for something like that

probably, maybe I should pull out the hand weights.

Enjoy it!

Hello Everyone,

I know it has been awhile, but a topic I have to touch

on is this.. has been having a blast here on

the " fake " snow skiing. And most recently today she

went to play sled hockey, and she loved it!

Always checking, just keepin' my mouth shut.. :)

At first yes if you have difficulty walking. Think riding a bike, you

dont use your arms to balance unless you let go of the handle bar. You

use your stomach, glutes, and back for balance. Once you have balance,

your arms are for steering and regaining balance. For those that have

little or know arm/hand function, there is a bi-ski (2) where you do not

have to use your arms, you lean or your trainer does the steering for

you with a tether cord skiing behind. I need to reactivate my glutes

(butt) for balance but there is really no exercise for them ,where some

other muscle takes over and overcompensates causing pain and stiffness

elsewhere like shoulders or knees. This forces my glutes to work w/out

some other muscle overcompensating, making it much easier to walk. I can

tell because after about an hour or 4 runs they give out and I can not

balance myself in the mono-ski anymore - time to quit til next week :-(

Thank you and I am. I would encourage everyone to do what they can and

try things they cant do. It might hurt a little at first but you feel

better in the long run - out of the house, fressh air, people contact,

exercise, etc.

I am going on 8 years post op with no signs of retethering, I believe

because of staying active. Swimming and hot tubs are great for those

that have more pain and less flexibility. I am going to water ski on a

chair this summer.
