Guest guest Posted August 12, 1999 Report Share Posted August 12, 1999 Peg, There is a blood test that shows if there is cancer in the body - I have to have the test for the next five years to check if the cancer returns. I don't think surgery causes the cancer to increase the activity but once it gets to the liver it can be spread through the blood to other organs. If it is operable or not depends on if it is contained in tumor/s or just spread like grains of sand through out (not very technical but I am sure you can get the drift). It is to cause amnesia and you forget the pain. By the time I go back to see about him he is usally sitting up in a recliner, with his glasses on and a cup of coffee. Mayo's requires four things before you leave any of that type of procedure -- can urinate can keep a drink down eat a piece of toast thiis is the wringer-- must have a responsible person with them. I don't really don't know what good I would do to catch him. He' down to about 140 lbs and I wwweigh only about 125 --he's 6 feet plus and I am just over 5 feet. I am sorry some doctor treated you so lousy. Be sure you tell them if you have a high or low threshold for pain and if you can be put under with a little or a lot of anesthesia and they should treat you better next time!!! It happens all the time. There are lots of medical tests required for transplant candidates and if there is a living donor there are lots of medical tests for them too. They will not accept a donor that is not in good health since there is some risk from the surgery. Thanks Roy T. I know how frustrating the waiting can be for all of us who are listed or have been considered for listing....I've been waiting now since 3/98 at a " 2B " status...and time seems to grow shorter for me as the disease progresses. I was on a support group on AOL several years ago but decided they were all too sick for me at the time. I just recently had several esophageal varices bleeds and a bout of disorentation/confusion. I also was making memory and speech boo boos for several months. I have been going through sclerotherapy to stop the internal bleeding. The bleeding is caused from too much pressure in the liver. After having UC and Pericholangitis for 21 years and a diagnosis of PSC/AIH 5 years ago. I was just recently told I should be on a liver tx list. I met with a surgeon and the tx coordinator at the U of M Hospital in Ann Arbor, Michigan they all agreed I would be a candidate for the tx list and be listed as a 3. A week after I met with them and had some routine pre tx tests, I got a call from my doctors office that said I would not be going on the list. I don't have enough points. Does anyone know how these points are established/ counted etc.? I remember several years ago that there was talk that psc patients were having trouble accruing points like hep C or other liver disease patients. I remember sending my Doctor that particular note. He chose not to respond and I did not push the issue. I feel like I have been on the roller coaster from hell these past 6 weeks. Any comments would be appreciated. When Ty was diagnosed with PSC and AIH the first question from me was would he be able to get a transplant being that the AIH he actually HIS system destroying himself...and that it would happen with a new liver again....I was asured by his doctors that he would be able to get one NO PROBLEM.....So from that I would say that is one thing we don't have to worry about..... I just cannot imagine how I could have handled it with my two sons. I just remember that my youngest son had horrible asthma when he was 8 months old until he was three. I bet I didn't get 2 months sleep total in three years. In those days, we didn't have all-night television to watch and get both our minds off of what was happening one minute. That is no consolation at all, but I do know how horrible sickness is with your children. I used to sit and rock for hours and hours and cry all the time I was rocking him. My first husband, who wasn't that bad a person really, hated it when I would take to the ER when he couldn't breathe. He said it was so expensive. We had a Corvette at the time and I would take out of the house, lay him in our car and push the car out of hearing range so my husband wouldn't throw a fit when I returned. What horrible days those were and just had asthma. My love, heart and soul goes out to you and all of the other mom's.
