Guest guest
Ellen, I am so sorry to hear about your toe! However, the pain should disappear soon. When my mother broke her toe, the pain was only severe for a couple of days. I've never broken anything, but I've had countless spectacular falls which produced plenty of pain. I can't imagine how much worse the pain would be when you've actually broken something. However, on the plus side, you made no mention of excessive bruising/bleeding under the skin due to Coumadin. My first thought when I read that you had banged your toe was, " Oh no, she takes Coumadin. " I expected you to say that your whole foot was black and blue or something of that nature. So, you see, it could be worse. (I'm trying to cheer you up although you probably can't tell.) My first thought when I fall or bang something (most recently my head) is of the effects of Coumadin, and I try to get ice on the affected part right away to slow down the bleeding. Well, that's probably enough about bruising and bleeding. On a more positive note, perhaps you could still exercise your upper body to get the energizing effects of exercise. I have some five pound weights which I use for weight lifting exercises along with more aerobic exercises. You can do a lot with those weights: biceps curls starting with the weights down at your side before you bend the elbow to bring them up; alternating arms, lift weights straight up to shoulder level and lower, extend each arm behind you with the weight, etc. If you're interested, I could give more graphic details of my workout with weights. Also, as you get stronger you can double up and lift the two weights with one arm (10 pounds!). Another possibility for exercising your upper body is a stationary indoor bike with handlebars that move back and forth to simulate rowing. My indoor bike has such a setup, and it really gives a good workout. You can also get rowing machines, too. I have used one but don't own one. You'll probably be walking again before long, at least on crutches, and will be able to get plenty of exercise. Hang in there, and look to the future. The pain will pass, and I admire you for not succumbing to the enticement of painkillers. Painkillers are more trouble than they're worth. ( I don't even have Novocain for dental work.) You don't need any more problems!
Guest guest
Hi : You know.......I was in such pain (and still am) that I forgot all about Coumadin. I didn't even mention it to him. I have a sock over the foot right now and I can barely walk. I'm afraid to look at it - it's got to be black and swollen. How about internal bleeding? Oh boy.........He does have my medical history and all the drugs that I'm on. He told me I could do upper body exercises. I do some exercises at the gym with 3 lb weights. I also use a bicycle - but not the ones with the handlebars because of my back. I'm a mess!!! Wow...now I'm concerned about the bleeding...........what a wimp I am. Guest guest
Oh Ellen, Ellen, Ellen, What have you gone and done, Dancing Girl. Why were you kicking your bedroom furniture with no shoes on. I am so sorry that this happened. I really am. I know how much you enjoy dancing, and your workouts at the gym were going so well. OK. Is it any consolation to know that it will heal and that by Halloween (at the LATEST) you are going to be out on the dance floor kicking up the dust again, wearing sexy shoes. Can you still go to the gym and do upper body work? Or ... how about taking the rest of the summer off! Give yourself a vacation! You have been working (and playing) very hard and you have come a long, long way from the Dark Times. Want to meet for brunch one of these days? I want to see how ugly the orthopedic shoe is. Can you drive with this toe? Keep your Spirits up, if you need anything (anything at all) please call me. Your afib/broken toe buddy, Sandy I done did it! Xrays showed a broken toe. WOW - it really hurts! Sh*t..........Sh*t.........Sh*t............Sh*t. Ellen
Guest guest
Oh thanks, Sandy...........I'm really feeling kinda down this afternoon - wondering what I'm going to do with myself. I also have an EKG and Blood Test appointment tomorrow morning at Duke...and have to go through that parking lot ordeal..........!! I also made an appointment with a personal trainer who is up on Osteoporosis; me thinks I can't keep that appointment. Please don't say Halloween <g>!! I'm making plans to drive to the Catkills (East Durham, NY) to do some Irish dancing - sometime in September. Do you think I'll make it? Yes, I can drive - I just can't walk <g>! Maybe lunch someday next week. I just don't want to think about going anywhere right now. I can't even take my garbage out..............WOW.......this thing really and truly hurts....... Feeling miserable and very sorry for myself........gotta snap out of it........... Ellen I don't know about those *sexy* shoes <g> ******************* (snip) What have you gone and done, Dancing Girl. Why were you kicking your bedroom furniture with no shoes on.(snip). OUCH! but as one wise person told me 'this too shall pass' take it easy Ellen - hope it heals quickly. Is the strapping waterproof? Maybe a gentle swim will keep you fit when your toe is rested? (obviously after talking to the professionals) you'll soon be young again! -- D

I'm sure your doctor would have seen or foreseen a problem with Coumadin causing bleeding when he examined you. If he didn't mention it, then Coumadin probably doesn't present a problem with your injury. I think a certain amount of bruising or internal bleeding occurs whenever someone breaks a bone, but it wouldn't necessarily be a serious problem because one is taking Coumadin. I mentioned the possibility of bleeding because I thought I should pass along an idea for a preventive measure which may have helped me avoid excessive bleeding as a result of my rather serious falls. For example, when my dog was taking me for a walk and lunged out of the house, pulling me so that I unceremoniously bumped down the stairs on my rear end instead of descending in the usual manner, I immediately put ice on the injured area for several hours. I have no scientific proof, but I believe that the ice may have slowed down the bleeding so that the resultant bruising was no more than one would expect from such an injury under normal circumstances. I could tell several more stories about falls and injuries which have caused me mental anguish because of the Coumadin but which have never resulted in serious bleeding. In fact, one might say I tend to be accident prone. (Two days ago I bashed my head on a window box while turning off the outdoor water and immediately envisioned brain hemorrhages and swelling, but I have had no ill effects. My INR is usually between 2.5 and 3.) I do hope the pain is better by now. At least you're in sinus rhythm, and that's the most important consideration! in Seattle
Guest guest
No problem ........I'm glad you brought it to my attention. Just goes to show that no matter what sh*t happens, a Coumadin patient should always be *aware*!!!! In my agony, I completely forgot about it. I have learned my lesson....... The Lord works in mysterious ways.........this was meant to happen.....maybe, as Sandy suggested, to slow me down. I was going at life at a clip - with my wonderful vacation in Nova Scotia, my workouts and my dancing. This is just a little set back! I'm still hobbling around in this ugly orthopaedic shoe, but the toe, although black and blue and still swollen, actually feels a wee bit better. Thanks Ellen (68 yrs young f/NC USA) ***************************** I certainly didn't mean to cause you extra concern (snip) *****************************
