Guest guest
Hey Karla, welcome to the group. I am Jena, 45. I have 2 fractured vertebrae's and 2 ruptured disc. I am sorry you have been having so much pain and trouble with your Dr's. My Pain Management Dr had to learn to test me. It is sad but there are so many out there that does abuse meds that it makes to rough on the rest of us. I can't believe yours didn't at least try and help you to begin with some kind of meds. Sure hope you appt tomorrow is more successful. Jena ~:~Jena~:~ My Home Page My E-mail New to the list..Intro.. Good evening, My name is Karla.. I am 44 and I live in Washington state with my husband of 23 years and our 18 year old son and several fur kids;-) Like many I suffer from daily pain and have for several years. My Dr was giving me some percocet for 3 months then quit letting me have it. I was only being given 28 pills a month and only took them when it was unbearable. He said he did not like giving those kinds of meds out. Phooey!! He took xrays of my back and found degenerative join disease, still denied me pain meds. I cannot take ibuprofen so he tried some other stuff, an anti-inflammatory.. Well I had no inflammation so those did not work, just burned my gut! I also have fibromyalgia and so I got a referral to go see a rheumatologist. He was understanding but wanted me to see a pain specialist.. So I did that the pain Dr said no pain meds and wanted me to see a psychiatrist that specializes in chronic pain, and also for me to go to PT... I never did either.. I refuse PT because I don't think it is right to make me hurt doing this (and it does, BTDT) and have nothing for pain afterwards. And I have a real problem with seeing a phsyc for PAIN! That makes absolutely no sense to me! So I have seen 3 drs for this and all 3 refuse to give me pain meds. I am with an HMO so they ALL have computer access to my records, there is no way to abuse these meds! And I have never had a problem with addiction to anything except smoking.. I also saw another Dr before getting hooked up with the HMO (group health) and he was another one of those drs who don't believe in pain treatment meds. I do not understand how these drs who are supposed to help people, will instead allow people to suffer!! I have the back pain, I also have it in my hips and my shoulders. Right now I am having serious shoulder pain. The pain is in the front part at the joint. It hurts to even touch, it was so bad yesterday and last night I was in tears. I have a high tolerance for pain and this went beyond my tolerance. It is a bit better now but I did make a drs appt tomorrow.. However, I feel like, why bother, they aren't going to help me. Just help themselves to my money. I don't know what else to do to get someone to HELP ME! Anyhow, that is what is going on with me pretty much in a nut shell... Also I am on disability but went on that about 11 years ago for Bipolar..Trust me when I say it is a joke how much they give me a month and then they take out 86.00 off the top for medicare, and then I have to pay 130.00 a month for the supplemental insurance at group health. Plus pay for my meds. Thank god my husband works and makes decent money... Thanks for listening, Karla
Guest guest
Here's some sites you may find interesting as they are advocate for the treatment of chronic pain. There is a pain crisis in this country due to the attitude of some of these doctors. It's not uncommon. http://www.painfoundation.org/ http://www.ampainsoc.org/ http://www.aapainmanage.org/ http://www.aapainmanage.org/info/Patients.php http://www.painlaw.org/opioids.html We have a right to pain management with whatever it takes. They are so afraid of addiction or just don't want to deal with the fear of DEA doing audits. Half of them don't even know the difference between addiction and tolerance. Very few painers get addicted. But these sites work toward better pain management and it may give you some pointers on how to proceed...plus they have resources for pain treatment. Just have to get that attitude of " I'm mad as hell and I'm not going to take it anymore " . I still have a letter from my state rep acknowledging the pain epidemic. I wrote to him to support one of the pain bills. Now he's our Gov....gonna hang on to the letter in case I need it sometime. Dunno. Anyway..check out this kind of stuff and get involved and see what your rights are all about. There's many sites that help you find a compassionate doc. Without opiate treatment I'd be up a creek real quick and in a hurry cause of the action on nightmare spasms. If I move and have to explain that to a doc who doesn't know me....guess what he is gonna think. Do not quit. There are pain advocates. *¬*.¸¸.·´¨`»*«´¨`·.¸¸.*¬* On the internet, no knows you're a cat. ~StrykerMom~ ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ --- KC wrote: > Good evening, > My name is Karla.. Guest guest
When I went to see the pain specialist he said my Dr had ordered a CT scan.. But my Dr seemed to have forgotten to mention it to me..Pain doc said no use in doing it since we already know I have it from the xrays.. I thought that was kind of odd. Wouldn't it make sense to check everything since I have so much pain in other joints? My reg Dr is retiring and so now I have to pick another Dr from the clinic or one of the other clinics.. Which is fine with me.. I had to go in for the shoulder pain on Friday and had to see a fill in Dr.. He was nice and all but was pushing NSAIDS on me, I know I am not supposed to taking them while on lithium.. So he gave me one that they say doesn't interfere.. Well I get home and look it up and sure enough it says it can cause lithium toxicity! So I guess they would rather give me something that could make me deathly ill or kill me rather than a pain med.. That totally makes sense doesn't it. HA However, I think it is actually helping, not a lot but I am not in as pain as I was. The arthritis Dr did put me on Gabapentin and it did absolutely nothing for me...I am very angry and frustrated with drs right now. Thanks:-) Karla
Guest guest
Hi Jena, Dr actually did put me on an anti inflammatory and the other put me on Gabapentin, neither did a thing for me, except cost me money..lol..The thing is, I am not supposed to be taking anti-inflammatory's because I take lithium.. But they insist on giving them to me anyhow.. I don't get it.. Thanks for the welcome.. I would of answered sooner but we had no power for a couple of days due to the awful storm we had here in WA state... Karla -------Original Message------- Hey Karla, welcome to the group. Guest guest
I made a typo in my earlier message. I meant to say my PM Dr. has learned to " trust " me. Guest guest
It is very easy to get to that point with Dr's. Esp. when you are in such pain. My parents go to the biggest quack around here and he makes me sooo mad. But they will not change even though I blame him partly for my brothers death. would go to him with his diabetes and his ankles were huge they just hung over his shoes they were so swollen and this Dr never noticed it. Until went with what he thought was a kidney infection. And he had so much protein it was unreal. By this time, he had 19% kidney function. But my parents do not see it that way. Anyways I will get off my soapbox about that. There are some good Pain Management Dr's out there. You just got to look til you find a good one. Guest guest
Hi Karla If you're not suppose to be taking NSAIDS, then tell the Dr.s that you can't take them because you're on lithium and that you've had a bad reaction to them. That way they won't try to give them to you. My Dr.s (not PM) keep wanting to give them to me, but I tell them I can't take them because I have allergic reactions to them. I also have allergic reactions to Vicodin. They just scratch their heads and say " I don't know what we can do for you. I guess you'll just have to learn to live with it " . Meaning my pain.
