I see in my own family and among other diabetics a large number of skin allergies, food allergies - and a lot of asthma. And those were big babies to be born two months premature, Naomi. It sounds as if the nurses had you figured right. Susie
Guest guest
Hmmmmm this is interesting. I had fraternal twins prematurely delivered at 7 months. One weighed 4 lb 5 oz. and the other 5 lbs. (Each baby is in a separate afterbirth which weighs as much as the baby) so that would mean a total weight of the babies was 9.5 oz. I weighed in at a " whopping " 124 lbs the day they were born. I never could get up to 100 lbs except when I was pregnate. (I cheated on the next one and adopted him at a year old. That one was a breeze....No pain, no strain!) Seriously though, I've had various health problems since the birth of the twins. Never even gave it a thought to connect it to diabetes even though every time that I was in the hospital the nurses told me my blood sugar was entirely too high. They even questioned me as to whether anyone had ever told me I was a diabetic. " No, of course not. The doctors never ever suggested it! " I have also become allergic to various food allergies since that time. (eggs, milk, broccoli) I wonder if these food allergies are also an indication of diabetes?????? big babies I know now there is a correlation between big babies and developing diabetes down the road. Didnt know that then though. My first kid was 9 lbs 7 ozs and two days early, my 2nd would have been about 11 lbs if he'd hung in there for those extra three weeks. The subject of diabetes was never mentioned to me with either pregnancy and at that time I didnt know anything about it so I never asked. Oh how I wish I could turn back the clock! I understand that nowadays a bg check is standard prenatal care, at least here in Ontario Canada - sounds like a good idea to me! It's odd they asked you about being a gestational diabetic ... Wonder why no one checked you for it ... Guest guest
I was already diabetic prior to becoming pregnant (I was diagnosed Type 1 at 28, 4 months later I became pregnant). I was in excellent control for the term (although my insulin requirements went up 3x normal), but my hba1c was pretty stable at about a 6 to 7. (Note: this was 10 yrs ago, in the days when the ADA exchange system was the only diet). I gained 40 lbs, and my baby was born at just under 8 lbs, in the normal range. I suspect that if I had higher bg's, that the birth weight would have been substantially higher. (Still trying to shake off that " baby " weight
Guest guest
I was trying not to get in to this one, but I believe, that if they had done things like this in the *olden days*, I would have been diagnosed with gestational diabetes. I didn't even gain a pound throughout my pregnancy and gave birth to a 9 pound 2 ounce baby boy! My * little angel* is now 37! After his birth, I began to gain weight at an alarming rate. (I had fought this all my teen years with all the diet information available---which was *starve yourself* and as I did, I would only gain more! I had friends who ate like pigs and stayed thin! I picked at my food and could barely squeeze into my clothes! I really believe that my pancreas was going awry even then by pumping out too much insulin. Even now, as I inject insulin to keep my bgs in control, I gain weight! On the ADA and 1500 calories, I gained 35 pounds in the two weeks after starting on insulin! Now, even as I low carb, it (the weight) is still resistant! Maybe I am one of those people who is meant to be *jolly* (you know the type----laughing on the outside and crying within!) *hugs* Toni Re: big babies > > > I was already diabetic prior to becoming pregnant (I was diagnosed Type 1 at 28, 4 > months later I became pregnant).
