It is good to vent and get off your chest. You don't want to keep all of it

in and make things worse.

I hope it is a reaction to the antibiotics. Sounds like you have dealt with

this before. So it makes sense that it is a reaction to the drugs and not UC.

If it was UC, I don't think the Immodium would have helped. I tried that when

I was first dx with UC and it didn't even phase it. I think I had it for 6

months before they finally did a colonoscopy. As always, I will keep you and

everyone else in my prayers.

Speaking of getting off of drugs. I am trying to come off steriods. I have

been on them for about 3 years now. Up and down from 5mg to 30 over the 3

year period. I have been on 5mg for over a month with only going up to 10mg

for a day or two. The goal is to get to 5mg every other day and then off. If

it doesn't work, then the Dr. wants to put me on Imuran or 6MP. I go for one

regular Dr. appt. today for a physical and my Gastro in May. I will keep

praying that I can get off these drugs and get my body somewhat back to

normal.

Take care and we'll keep praying,

Larry

Hi ,

Ed was on Augmentin after his ERCP/Stent removal last Fall. He had diarrhea

from that too and had to get off it. It's a reasonably new drug I think and

strong...

Don't worry about the " whining " . As I've said before I feel that those of us

dealing with this disease have good reason. Healthy people with no one to worry

about but themselves don't!

Ed has also had high blood pressure (in the hospital). It worried me,but, they

told us it's common for people with PSC. It's probably good to keep an eye on

it.

Well, have fun in the sun this weekend! I'm also heading towards the ocean. I'm

taking my mom out for her birthday tommorow and we're going to a restaurant by

the ocean!

Take care,

Gracie

Larry,

I am trying to get off steroids as well. What side effects are you having

as your dosage is being reduced? I am down to 10 mgs now and hope to start

decreasing to 5mg. next week.

Janet,

Gald to hear that you're getting off them too. I have been trying for 5

months now to get to 5mg every other day. I hope it works this time.

I haven't really noticed too many side effects with the drop in dosage.

Although I have read that you start to experience hair loss. I can't tell if

that is effected because I have been losing that part for a long time now.

Usually when you are on the prednisone for a long period you tend to gain

more hair so the stuff you are losing is the excess. If you're hair does

start to thin it will soon grow back.

If you had joint pains before you may start to feel those again. The steriods

tend to mask any of those problems. Before I started, my knuckles in my hands

would hurt. That went away after I started the steriods. I now take calcium

with D two times a day. I also take glucosamine and chondroitrin for joint

repair. Steriods will also mess up the bones over a long period of time so I

am trying to prevent that from happening.

If you have been on the steriods for longer than 3 years you should probably

get a bone density scan. I had one 5 months ago and everything was fine.

I hope this helps.

Thanks for the prayers, Larry. I came off of steroids after 11 years (and after

having gained a whopping 90 lbs). I finally had to see an endocrinologist to

get

off, but it really feels great to finally be rid of the difficulties they can

cause. Good luck with it. Watch for 1)nausea; 2)lack of energy; 3) very dry,

scaly skin; and 4) joint aches. These were symptoms I experienced that said I

was coming off too fast, and they had to adjust the dosage so that there wasn't

a

drastic reduction of the steroids. I'll keep my fingers crossed that you'll

have

an easy time of it.

Thanks for the info on the steriods. I haven't had the joint aches yet but I

am sure they will come. I do have the dry skin and I am itching a little

also. Thanks God I don't have any nausea, YET. I will keep track of how

things progress.

Thanks again, Larry

That's interesting, Phil has hand and finger joint pain. He was told by his old

doctors that it was arthritis. (Course that's always what they say when

they don't know what it is. I didn't put it with the PSC before.

It probably is arthritis. The prednisone, being an anti inflammatory

medicine, relieves the symptoms.

has arthritis that is sometimes pretty bad. I think that UC and

arthritis and maybe aslo PSC are basically all disorders of the immune

system, where the body reacts to itself.

I realize this is not a very scientific description! I think a lot of

patients with UC also have arthritis.
