I think what I was having may have been similar to a migraine, but it was definitely brought on by the Isosorbide Mononitrate that I had just started taking. I finally got in thouch with my doctor on friday, and told him what was happening and he said to quit taking it. Within a few hours I was back to normal. Not sure what the next step is in management of the varices... I think that was the last medication that they had to try for bringing down the portal hypertension. I guess they'll probably just try to manage them with banding now. I gotta call my doctor on monday and see what he says. > The effect (diverting excess blood flow from > the brain to the rest of the body) is the same as taking a hot > bath. Actually, I did try taking a hot bath, and that did help the headache some. It got more bearable for an hour or so anyway. athan

I can't eat anything with nitrates (hot dogs, ham, smoked > lunch meats, etc.) or I will get a migraine almost instantly. You're probably right. The articles I read about it seemed to indicate that it was the nitrates that were the active part. It's a vasodilator, which means it opens up the blood vessels. If I remember right, that's similar to what happens in migraines (at least it has to do with improper dilation or constriction of blood vessels). One article I read said that 38% of people on it got headaches, and 9% of them dropped out of the study due to the headaches. I guess I would have been in the 9%! I wonder if I'd get headaches from deli meats etc. I've been a vegetarian all my life so I really don't know! athan
Guest guest
Hi Thanks to all for the info and well wishes. I have spine problems(disk disease) and can't sleep on my back. I can only sleep on my left side, so neck pillows don't help me. The pain went from the base of my skull, all the way to the top. Don't think I've had one like that in a long, long time. Didn't ease up til later tonight. Manb, I hate headaches. Take care,Kay
