Guest guest
Sierra, My rheummy let me decide what to use next. He gave me videos on remicaide, humira and enbrel. I decided based on easy of use and convience. I have terrible venous access so remicaide was totally out of the question. PLus I was working full time and having to take off a day to get the infusion was not going to work and drive to the rheummy. Humira was totally out because others had complained about the pain and side effects when injecting it. Kineret was a consideration until I found out I had to inject it every day... So I was left with Enbrel. I like the facts not too many had complained about side effects from injections. I a consideration was which ones my insurance paid for and were the most cost effective. Guest guest
My rheumy let me decide between Enbrel and Humira. He said, " All of the drug representatives want me to prescribe their drugs. You are an intelligent person, so I'm letting you decide. " Remicade wasn't an option for me because you have to take methotrexate along with it. I can't take methotrexate because of a low white blood cell count. I'm sure that many doctors let the patient decide. It might be very inconvenient, for example, for some people to come in for infusions of Remicade. Other people might prefer that to self-injections. Guest guest
My rheumy started with what he thought to be the least problematic. When they did not work we talked about the next options. I believe we work collaberatvely. I've tried Plaquenil, Arava, MTX soley, Enbrel, Remicade, Kineret. I've used prednisone for some flares. I'm currently on Humira w/inj. Mtx. and doing pretty well. Guest guest
I hate to say this- because it sounds so cynical- insurance coverage has something to do with it; availability of the drug ( Enbrel was in short supply when I was put on Remicade); ability of the individual to tolerate IV infusion (Remicade). I have periodically had problems with Remicade- not because of the drug but because I have very small deep veins. My doc has discussed enbrel or humira as an alternative. All are pretty good and similar drugs. Hugs, Re: [ ] Biologicals > >sierra, i woul dlove to know that myself... Guest guest
It isn't mandatory that you take MTX with any of the biologics, but the FDA prescribing guidelines recommend that MTX be taken with Remicade. There is a lot of evidence that both Enbrel and Humira work better with MTX than without it. I'll tell you where to go! Guest guest
I take humira and I do not take mtx. I was on mtx before the humira and it worked well, however I ended up with breathing problems and had to drop it (I was on the lowest dose). Guest guest
, I take Enbel alone because I can't take Mtx but it is a fact Enbrel works better when combined with Mtx. Guest guest
My doctor told me that MTX was required with Remicade- requirement of most of the insurance companies - if I remember correctly. PDR I know notes the combination drug therapy. --------- Re: [ ] Biologicals > > > > > > tess... which ones do you have to take mtrx with.. those would be the > > ones i could not take..my doctor told me not to take mtrx ever again... *i > > am still waiting for my ultra sound appointment, of my liver* ) hope it > > looks real pretty, ha ha ha > > > > rae > > > >

Guest guest
You don't have to take MTX with Enbrel. Enbrel without MTX is working very well for me.
