I was laid off in 2003 and in 2004 my life just took a downhill tow. I first experienced pain in the summer of 2004, every month since then, I developed a new symptom. I still don't have a definite diagnosis. I know I have a herniated disk in my neck and some type of autoimmune disease, but that is all. Anyway, just to cap on what you said about Healthcare Professionals not really being understanding/empathetic to patients pains/illness; They(not you) will understand once they begin to get sick or in constant pain.
